TO PRESERVE THE HISTORY OF LEAVENWORTH, KS AND ITS SURROUNDING AREA AND TO PRESENT IT TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH MUSEUM PROGRAMS, DISPLAYS, EDUCATIONAL VIDEOS AND ANY OTHER MEANS POSSIBLE.

C.W.PARKER CAROUSEL MUSEUM. THIS MUSEUM PRESENTS THE HISTORY OF C.W. PARKER, WHO AT ONE TIME WAS THE LARGEST PRODUCER OF AMUSEMENT EQUIPMENT IN THE WORLD. THE 24,000 SQ. FT. BUILDING HOUSES 2 PARKER CAROUSELS MADE IN LEAVENWORTH AND DISPLAYS POSSIBLY THE OLDEST AMERICAN MADE CAROUSEL (CIRCA 1850-1865). GUESTS MAY RIDE THE 1913 WOODEN CAROUSEL, TOUR THE ARTIFACTS AND SHOP IN THE CAROUSEL ORIENTED GIFT SHOP. THE MUSEUM IS OPERATED SOLEY BY VOLUNTEERS AND IS NORMALLY OPEN 4 DAYS A WEEK. ENTRY TO THE BUILDING AND GIFT SHOP IS FREE, BUT A FEE IS CHARGED FOR CAROUSEL RIDES AND FOR TOURING THE ARTIFACTS. THE MUSEUM WAS RECENTLY DECLARED A NUMBER ONE TOURIST ATTRACTION IN KANSAS.
FIRST CITY MUSEUM. THIS MUSEUM HIGHLIGHTS THE LARGE ROLE LEAVENWORTH (THE FIRST CITY IN KANSAS) PLAYED IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE AREA AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE SETTLING OF THE WEST. FOUR AREAS OF CONCENTRATION ARE PRISONS, INDIAN TRIBES, BUSINESSES AND FAMOUS PEOPLE AND TEH MILITARY. THE MUSEUM HAS HOSTED THE FILMING OF A NATIONAL TELEVISION EPISODE AND A PRIVATE FILM, BOTH UTILIZING THE PRISON DISPLAYS. RECENTLY THE PRISION AREA HAS BEEN ENLARGED AND A CHILDRENS ROOM NEARS COMPLETION. THIS MUSEUM IS ALSO OPERATED SOLEY BY VOLUNTEERS. TOURS ARE AVAILABLE ON A REGULAR BASIS AND BY APPOINTMENT. ADMISSION IS CHARGED.
NATIONAL FRED HARVEY MUSEUM. THIS MUSEUM IS IN THE FAMILY HOME OF FRED HARVEY - FAMOUS RESTAURANTEER KNOWN FOR HIS STRING OF RESTAURANTSAND HOTELS ALONG THE SANTA FE RAILROAD ROUTE FROM CHIACAGO TO LOS ANGELES. ARTIFACTS FROM THE FAMILY AND THE HARVEY COMPANY ARE ON DISPLAY IN THE ADJACENT CARRIAGE HOUSE. GUESTS MAY TOUR THE MANSION WHICH IS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTRY OF HISTORIC PROPERTIES. STILL IN ITS FORMATIVE STAGE, THE HOME IS BEING RESTORED BY DEDICATED VOLUNTEERS. IT IS OPEN FOR PRE-ARRANGED TOURS AND EVENTS AT THIS TIME. ADMISSION IS CHARGED.
PARENT ORGANIZATION. RECEIVES GENERAL DUES AND PAYS GENERAL OPERATING EXPENSES FOR THE ENTIRE MUSEUM SYSTEM.
