SPEACH AND DEBATE IN THE LAST DECADE, THE DEBATE TEAM HAS REACHED NATIONAL PROMINENCE BY CONSISTENTLY BEING RANKED AS ONE OF THE TOP 10. IT HAS WON MULTIPLE NATIONAL AND DOZENS OF STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS. WE WORK WITH OVER 150 STUDENTS FOSTERING CHARACTER AND FOCUSING ON THE WAYS IN WHICH SPEECH AND DEBATE CAN SERVE AS A VEHICLE FOR GREATER ACADEMIC AND PERSONAL GROWTH. THE SHY BECOME BOLD, THE UNFOCUSED BECOME PURPOSEFUL, AND THE INEXPERIENCED BECOME MASTERS AT THEIR INDIVIDUAL CRAFT. OVER TIME, MOST BECOME LEADERS NOT ONLY IN OUR PROGRAM BUT IN ALL AREAS OF THEIR LIVES. THIS IS BECAUSE OF THE INDIVIDUALIZED RESOURCES AND ATTENTION THAT GEORGE WASHINGTON SPEACH AND DEBATE STRIVES TO GIVE EVERY STUDENT. WE PROVIDE ONE-ON-ONE INSTRUCTION BY SEVERAL COACHES THAT CAN WORK WITH STUDENTS VIRTUALLY AND OUTSIDE OF CLASS. NONE OF THIS COULD BE DONE WITHOUT RESOURCES. WE MUST INDEPENDENTLY FUND THE PROGRAM BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THE SCHOOL. WE DEPEND ON THE GENEROSITY OF DONORS TO PROVIDE OUR STUDENTS WITH THE LEVEL OF EXCELLENCE THEY DESERVE.
PATRIOT PAIRS THIS PROGRAM TARGETS ENTERING FRESHMEN AND RETURNING SOPHOMORES AT GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL BY CONNECTING THEM TO TRUSTED ADULT MENTORS. EDUCATION HAPPENS WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A LARGER COMMUNITY. OUR APPROACH EXTENDS BEYOND THE SCHOOL TO HELP ENSURE STUDENTS HAVE THE NECESSARY SUPPORT TO FEEL AND BE THEIR BEST SELVES. WORKSHOPS AND ACTIVITIES ARE FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF RACIAL, ETHNIC, SEXUAL AND/OR GENDER IDENTITY WHILE HONING IN ON UNTAPPED LEADERSHIP SKILLS. THIS IS INTENDED TO APPLY LIVED AND LEARNED EXPERIENCES TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE NEEDS, IDENTITIES AND CULTURE OF OUR STUDENTS. THIS APPROACH PROMOTES EFFECTIVE BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT, ENGAGING INSTRUCTION, AND SCHOOL-WIDE ACTIVITIES TO STRENGTHEN THE COMMUNITY-BUILDING EXPERIENCE FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS WHO ARE AT A CRITICAL JUNCTURE IN THEIR ADOLESCENCE. FALL 2022 STUDENTS COMPLETED READING THE FOUR AGREEMENTS BY DON MIGUEL RUIZ, COMPLETED GOAL SETTING AND VISION BOARDS, COMMUNITY SERVICE FOR THE HOMELESS AND VISITED MAXAR TECHNOLOGIES. THEY PARTICIPATED IN THE LGBTQIA SCHOOLWIDE ASSEMBLY.
PATRIOT PLAYERS GEORGE WASHINGTON HIGH SCHOOL HAS ONE OF THE BEST THESPIAN TROUPES IN THE STAT OF COLORADO, TROUPE 1621. THE PATRIOT PLAYERS PROVIDE A SAFE SPACE FOR OVER 50 STUDENTS TO ACT, SING, DANCE, AND WORK WITH TECHNICAL THEATER BOTH DURING AND AFTER SCHOOL. THE STUDENTS LEARN VALUABLE LIFE SKILLS FROM WORKING TOGETHER AS A TEAM TO DESIGN LIGHTS, COSTUMES, AND THEATRICAL SETS. PATRIOT CARES PLAYS A VITAL ROLE IN THE PATRIOT PLAYERS BY PROVIDING AN ACCOUNT THAT EASILY ALLOWS US TO BUY COSTUMES, PROPS, AND SET PIECES FROM VARIOUS PLACES AS WELL AS WOOD AND TOOLS FROM HOME DEPOT FOR BUILDING SETS. THIS IS INVALUABLE WHEN NEEDING LAST MINUTE BATTERIES FOR MICROPHONES DURING SHOWS.
