Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES; AND TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT AND SPREAD OF COMMON PROTOCOLS FOR THIS PRACTICE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN FY21 WE CONTINUED TO EXPAND OUR RESEARCH INTO THE TIMES AND PLACES THAT USING ELECTRICITY CAUSES THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL HARM. SOME NOTABLE MILESTONES INCLUDE EXPANDING THE AVAILABILITY OF OUR DATA FROM 18 COUNTRIES TO 28 COUNTRIES. WE ALSO UPGRADED OUR MODEL TO BETTER HANDLE "FLOW TRACING", I.E. THE TRADE OF ELECTRICITY BETWEEN NUMEROUS COUNTRIES (IN EUROPE) OR POWER GRIDS (IN THE US). AS EXPECTED, THE ALGORITHM UPDATES FURTHER INCREASED THE ACCURACY OF WHICH TIMES AND LOCATIONS OF ELECTRICITY USE CAUSE THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL HARM. WE ALSO BEGAN MONITORING NEW TYPES OF ENVIRONMENTAL HARM FROM ELECTRICITY. WHEREAS BEFORE OUR ALGORITHMS PRIMARILY MEASURED GREENHOUSE GASSES AND MERCURY POLLUTION, WE BEGAN ALSO MEASURING WHAT TIMES USING ELECTRICITY LEADS TO ENVIRONMENTAL HARMS RELATED TO HEALTH. FOR EXAMPLE, WE NOW CONDUCT RESEARCH ON WHAT TIMES OF DAY USING ELECTRICITY WILL DRIVE FEWER HOSPITALIZATIONS FROM CONDITIONS SUCH AS ASTHMA. WE ALSO NOW MEASURE EFFECTS OF ELECTRICITY TIMING ON ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE, FOR EXAMPLE WHAT TIMES OF DAY WILL PARTICULARLY MINIMIZE ADVERSE HEALTH HARMS TO VULNERABLE COMMUNITIES.AS HIGHLIGHTED IN OUR FY20 990, IN FY21 WE ALSO CONDUCTED EXTENSIVE RESEARCH INTO DIRECTLY MONITORING EMISSIONS OF POWER PLANTS BY APPLYING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE TO SATELLITE IMAGERY OF THOSE POWER PLANTS. THESE ALGORITHMS ARE CAPABLE OF MEASURING HOW EMISSIONS AT DIFFERENT POWER PLANTS CHANGE OVER TIME. THUS, OUR PRIMARY PURPOSE IN THIS WORK IS TO USE THESE EMISSIONS DATA TO IMPROVE OUR ALGORITHMS THAT DETECT WHAT TIMES USING ELECTRICITY CAUSE THE LEAST ENVIRONMENTAL HARM. HOWEVER, THIS RESEARCH ALSO HAS NUMEROUS OTHER ENVIRONMENTALLY BENEFICIAL APPLICATIONS. WE ARE THEREFORE ALSO USING IT TO CONSTRUCT A FREE, PUBLIC, OPEN DATABASE OF EMISSIONS FROM THE WORLD'S POWER PLANTS. WE ARE ALSO WORKING WITH A LARGE COALITION OF OTHER NONPROFITS, UNIVERSITIES, AND IN SOME CASES TECH COMPANIES TO PROVIDE EQUIVALENT DATA ON THE EMISSIONS OF NUMEROUS SOURCES, INCLUDING NOT JUST POWER PLANTS, BUT ALSO FACTORIES, SHIPS, PLANES, AND SO ON. WE ARE CALLING THIS JOINT PROJECT CLIMATE TRACE. IN FY21, CLIMATE TRACE COMPLETED A DRAFT OF THE FIRST EVER INDEPENDENT EMPIRICAL MEASUREMENT OF GHG EMISSIONS FROM EVERY COUNTRY AROUND THE WORLD TO PEER REVIEW SCIENTISTS. THE RESEARCH HAS BEEN WIDELY ACCLAIMED FOR ITS SIGNIFICANT POTENTIAL TO ENABLE AND ACCELERATE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT. FOR EXAMPLE IT IS THE SUBLET OF A WIDELY VIEWED TED TALK, AND TIME NAMED CLIMATE TRACE TO ITS BEST 100 BEST INVENTIONS OF THE YEAR.WE ALSO EXPANDED OUR MARKET EDUCATION AND ASSISTANCE WORK. WE COLLABORATED WITH INSTITUTIONS LIKE SALESFORCE AND BOSTON UNIVERSITY TO RELEASE WHITE PAPERS AND HOW-TO GUIDES ON USING DATA TO BETTER SITE RENEWABLE ENERGY IN TIMES AND PLACES WHERE IT WILL MORE EFFECTIVELY REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM. WE ALSO SUPPORTED COMPANIES LIKE BRAINBOX AI IN DEPLOYING TECHNOLOGY TO SHIFT THE ELECTRICITY USE OF LARGE COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS TO TIMES WHEN IT WOULD REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM IN THE FORM OF CO2 AND MERCURY EMISSIONS.
