Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
TO RAISE AWARENESS ABOUT THE POTENTIAL TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY SHIFTING ELECTRICITY USE TO PARTICULAR TIMES; AND TO ENCOURAGE THE DEVELOPMENT AND SPREAD OF COMMON PROTOCOLS FOR THIS PRACTICE.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
IN FY22 WE CONTINUED OUR RESEARCH PROGRAM, WITH A PARTICULAR EMPHASIS ON DEVELOPING TRANSPARENT, SCIENTIFICALLY RIGOROUS APPROACHES THAT ANYONE CAN USE TO VALIDATE THE ACCURACY OF THE "MARGINAL EMISSIONS" DATA THAT QUANTIFY WHICH TIMES CAUSE MORE OR LESS ENVIRONMENTAL HARM, I.E. EMISSIONS. OUR GOAL IS TO CREATE AN OPEN, FREE, STANDARDIZED APPROACH THAT ANYONE CAN USE TO VALIDATE THE ACCURACY OF MARGINAL EMISSIONS DATA, SHARED ACROSS MANY ORGANIZATIONS.WE ALSO SUPPORTED A NUMBER OF ORGANIZATIONS IN ADOPTING AUTOMATED EMISSIONS REDUCTION (FORMERLY ENVIRONMENTAL DEMAND RESPONSE). CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE OFOR EXAMPLE, WE SHOWED TOYOTA HOW TO AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT THE CHARGING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE IT MANUFACTURES TO TIMES ELECTRICITY CAUSED LOWER EMISSIONS; AND HELPED MICROSOFT BEGIN SCHEDULING WINDOWS UPDATES (WHICH CONSUME A LOT OF ELECTRICITY) TO LESS HARMFUL TIMES.WE ALSO HELPED THE NEW YORK CITY MAYOR'S OFFICE IDENTIFY WHICH TIMES WERE MORE AND LESS ENVIRONMENTALLY HARMFUL, TO SUPPORT IMPLEMENTATION OF NYC LOCAL LAW 97, A LAW DESIGNED TO REDUCE EMISSIONS FROM BUILDINGS IN PART BY SHIFTING THEIR ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION TO LESS HARMFUL TIMES. FURTHER, WE HELPED THE MISSOURI OFFICE OF THE PUBLIC COUNSEL AND ELECTRIC UTILITY AMEREN MISSOURI PILOT A PROGRAM TO AUTOMATICALLY SHIFT THE CHARGING OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES TO LOWER-EMITTING TIMES.WE ALSO MADE SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS ON OUR CLIMATE TRACE PROJECT TO MONITOR EMISSIONS FROM SPACE USING SATELLITES AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE. IN NOVEMBER 2022, WE WERE ABLE TO RELEASE AN ANALYSIS OF THE EMISSIONS OF 72,000 OF THE LARGEST INDIVIDUAL SOURCES OF EMISSIONS WORLDWIDE. THE LARGEST NUMBER OF THESE SOURCES WERE ELECTRICITY-PRODUCING POWER PLANTS. WE CONTINUE TO MAKE THESE DATA MORE AND MORE DETAILED, AND IN FY23, WE EXPECT THESE DATA TO BE FINALLY BE DETAILED ENOUGH THAT WE CAN BEGIN ANALYZING THEM DATA TO IDENTIFY WHICH TIMES USING ELECTRICITY WOULD BE LESS ENVIRONMENTALLY HARMFUL. WE ALSO BEGAN CONDUCTING RESEARCH INVESTIGATING THE POSSIBILITY THAT SIMILAR ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNIQUES MIGHT BE POSSIBLE IN OTHER SECTORS THAN ELECTRICITY. FOR EXAMPLE, WE USED CLIMATE TRACE DATA TO INVESTIGATE WHETHER IT MIGHT ALSO BE POSSIBLE TO REDUCE ENVIRONMENTAL HARM BY HAVING SHIPS TRAVEL AT PARTICULAR SPEEDS, OR AIRPLANES TRAVEL PARTICULAR ROUTES. IN FY23, WE HOPE TO LEARN WHETHER THESE EARLY PILOTS POINT TO NEW MEANS TO REDUCE EMISSIONS THROUGH OPTIMIZING TIME, PLACE, AND SIMILAR TRAITS OF EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES.
