Part 3
OUR SECTION 501(C)(3) RECOGNIZED TAX-EXEMPT EDUCATIONAL NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION PLANT-BASED PREVENTION OF DISEASE, INC. (P-POD) PRODUCES FULLY ACCREDITED YEARLY NATIONAL CONFERENCES FOCUSED UPON THE HEALTH PROFESSIONS WHILE WELCOMING THE PUBLIC, AND EXPLORING EVIDENCE-BASED NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE MEDICINE IN THE PREVENTION AND EVEN TREATMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE, CANCER, DIABETES, CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AND OTHER CHRONIC DISEASES. FOR 2021 WE PRODUCED MORE THAN ONE ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR THE FIRST TIME, PLANNING IN-PERSON EVENTS IN THREE DIFFERENT CITIES, HOWEVER IN EACH CASE THE LINGERING AND PERIODICALLY RESURGING HAZARDS OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC DID ULTIMATELY FORCE CONVERSION OF THE CONFERENCE TO VIRTUAL-ONLY PARTCIPATION. THE THREE CONFERENCES, HELD IN MAY, JUNE AND OCTOBER, AWARDED A COMBINED TOTAL OF 45 CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDIT HOURS TO PHYSICIANS, OSTEOPATHS, NURSE PRACTITIONERS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS, REGISTERED NURSES, REGISTERED DIETITIANS, REGISTERED DIETETIC TECHNICIANS AND CANDIDATES FOR THE DIPLOMATE CREDENTIALING EXAMINATION ADMINISTERED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE AND AMERICAN COLLEGE OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE. VARIOUS OTHER PRACTITIONERS SUCH AS PHYSICAL THERAPISTS, OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS, PHARMACISTS, PSYCHOLOGISTS, CERTIFIED HEALTH EDUCATORS OR CERTIFIED HEALTH COACHES DID PARTICIPATE AS WELL, AND IN SOME CASES WERE ABLE TO PRESENT CREDITS EARNED TO THE APPLICABLE STATE REGULATORY BOARDS IN THEIR OWN FIELDS. WE DO EMPHASIZE STRONGLY THE RELEVANCE OF THE WHOLE TEAM OF HEALTH CARE PRACTITIONERS IN ADDRESSING AND INFLUENCING THE LIFESTYLES AND CHRONIC DISEASE INCIDENCE OF PATIENTS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS, AND ALL CAN BENEFIT SUBSTANTIALLY FROM CONTINUING EDICATION MODALITY EXPOSURE TO PRINCIPLES AND CLINICAL PERSPECTIVES OF NUTRITION AND LIFESTYLE MEDICINE THAT HAVE TYPICALLY BEEN MUCH NEGLECTED DURING PRIMARY LEVEL PREPARATION IN THESE FIELDS.OUR PRESENTERS, WHO ARE DISTINGUISHED RESEARCHERS, CLINICIANS AND EDUCATORS, ALWAYS REFLECT DIVERSITY DEMOGRAPHICALLY AND A WIDE RANGE OF BACKGROUNDS, PROFESSIONAL DISCIPLINES AND PERSPECTIVES, AND SIXTY-TWO IN ALL WERE ENGAGED FOR OUR THREE 2021 CONFERENCES. SOME ROUND TABLES AND DUETS WERE PROGRAMMED IN ADDITION TO SOLOS, AND FOR EACH PRESENTATION THERE WERE PROCEDURES PROVIDED FOR ATTENDEES TO SUBMIT QUESTIONS TO THE SPEAKERS.WE CONTINUED TO DEVELOP AND CHAMPION THE ATTRIBUTES OF OUR CONFERENCE THAT MAKE US QUITE UNIQUE, SUCH AS OUR NONPROFITS REFUSAL TO ACCEPT ANY FUNDING, SPONSORSHIP OR INFLUENCE AT ALL FROM COMMERCIAL SOURCES, AND OUR MAINTAINING MORE AFFORDABLE REGISTRATION PRICES THAN WOULD BE FOUND FOR MOST ACCREDITED PROFESSIONAL CONFERENCES IN THE U.S. VIA THE LATTER WE HAVE INTENDED THAT A BROAD DIVERSE SPECTRUM OF GRASSROOTS ATTENDEES AND COMMUNITY-LEVEL HEALTH PROMOTERS MAY PARTICIPATE, AND WE HAVE SOUGHT TO EXPAND THIS ACCESSIBILITY BY CONTINUING THE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM WE LAUNCHED IN 2019. WE HAVE CUMULATIVELY INVESTED $11,469 IN OUR SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO ENABLE ATTENDANCE BY 36 INDIVIDUALS, RACIALLY DIVERSE AND STRONGLY REPRESENTING INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES, AND WE INTEND TO INCREASE SUCH OPPORTUNITIES ANNUALLY IN THE FUTURE, AS WELL AS RESTORING THE NUMEROUS VOLUNTEER OPENINGS WE HAVE ALWAYS HAD IN THE PRE-PANDEMIC IN-PERSON CONFERENCE SETTING. AS IN THE PAST, WE ALSO IN 2021 DISTINCTIVELY CONTINUED TO POST ONLINE ALL VERBAL COMMENTS MADE BY ANY ATTENDEES ABOUT THE CONFERENCE OVERALL.WE HAVE IN 2021 INCREASED THE SIZE, RANGE-OF-EXPERIENCE AND DEMOGRAPHIC REPRESENTATION OF OUR NOW-THIRTEEN-MEMBER NONPROFIT BOARD OF DIRECTORS. WE ADDED FIVE NEW MEMBERS, AS LONGTIME DIRECTOR MICAELA KARLSEN, PHD MSPH FORMALIZED AN EXTENDED LEAVE OF ABSENCE AND LONGTIME DIRECTOR AND NURSE PLANNER CAROLINE TRAPP, DNP ANP-BC CDE FAANP DIPACLM RETIRED, BEARING OUR SINCERE GRATITUDE.OUR PAID STAFF, SHIFTING FROM FOUR TOWARD FIVE PART-TIME INDIVIDUALS, ACCOMPLISHED THE REMARKABLE FEAT OF PRODUCING THREE 2021 CONFERENCES THROUGH AN AVERAGE OF JUST SEVENTY-TWO HOURS PER WEEK OF STAFF TIME, LESS THAN TWO FULL-TIME-EQUIVALENT POSITIONS! WE HAVE SINCE 2018 BEEN APPROVED BY THE AMERICAN BOARD OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE AS ONE OF THE FIVE PRODUCERS OF CONFERENCES SATISFYING THE IN-PERSON CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION PREREQUISITE FOR THEIR PROFESSIONAL EXAMINATION CANDIDATES, AND WE HAVE BEGUN TO EMPHASIZE MORE FORTHRIGHTLY OUR SUPPORT FOR THEIR CREDENTIALING PROCESS AND OUR EMBRACE OF THE SIX PILLARS OF LIFESTYLE MEDICINE PRACTICE: HEALTHFUL EATING OF WHOLE PLANT-BASED FOOD; BENEFICIAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITY; STRATEGIES TO MANAGE STRESS; FORMING AND MAINTAINING RELATIONSHIPS; IMPROVING SLEEP; AVOIDING RISKY SUBSTANCES. FOR THE TWO PANDEMIC YEARS OF 2020-2021 ONLY, OUR VIRTUAL CONFERENCES WERE OF COURSE AUTHORIZED TO SATISFY THE IN-PERSON DIPLOMATE EXAMINATION PREREQUISITE WHICH NORMALLY DEMANDS PHYSICAL-PRESENCE ATTENDANCE.AS WE CLOSE 2021 WE HAVE GRADUALLY MOVED TOWARD UTILIZING A P-POD CONFERENCE CURRICULUM, OUR CORE TOPIC AREAS, DEFINING A DISTINCT AND INNOVATIVELY COMPREHENSIVE ARRAY OF EDUCATIONAL CONTENT AREAS THAT WE WILL SEEK TO COVER CONSISTENTLY IN EVERY FUTURE EVENT. BASICALLY, THE RANGE OF KEY SUBJECT MATTER TOPICS THAT WERE COVERED THROUGH THE COMBINATION OF THREE 2021 CONFERENCES, IS INTENDED TO BE ADDRESSED IN SOME MANNER WITHIN EACH SINGLE CONFERENCE AFTER 2021. BELOW IS OUR LIST OF CORE TOPIC AREAS, PARAPHRASED AND RESEQUENCED AS OF THIS WRITING:PROMOTING HEALTHFUL BEHAVIORS AT THE COMMUNITY-PROGRAM AND PRIMARY-CARE LEVELSCANCER PREVENTION AND SURVIVORSHIPCARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH AND DISEASEDIABETES PREVENTION OR REVERSALEXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY, AND MOVEMENT IN DAILY LIFESTYLEHEALTH EQUITY, VULNERABLE POPULATIONS, AND ACCESS DISPARITIES FOR CARE AND NUTRITIOUS-FOODKIDNEY HEALTH AND CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASEMENTAL AND BRAIN HEALTHMICROBIOTA / GUT HEALTH AND DYSBIOSIS / GUT-BRAIN AXIS / IMMUNE HOMEOSTASIS AND AUTOIMMUNITYPEDIATRICSPLANT-BASED NUTRITION AS A PRACTICAL RESOURCE IN CHRONIC DISEASE PREVENTION/REVERSALRESTORATIVE (SLEEP, SOCIAL CONNECTION) AND DEGRADING (CHRONIC STRESS, RISKY SUBSTANCES) LIFESTYLE FACTORSWOMEN'S HEALTHNOTE THAT LIFESTYLE MEDICINE'S SIX PILLARS" ARE EMBEDDED THROUGHOUT THE ABOVE CORE TOPICS, AND WE HAVE CERTAINLY NOT ABANDONED OUR MOTTO OF MANY YEARS: THE FUTURE OF HEALTHCARE BEGINS WITH NUTRITION!.WE WILL CONTINUE TO NAVIGATE THE EXTRAORDINARILY CHAOTIC AND DISRUPTED LANDSCAPE OF PRODUCING EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES DURING AN ERA WHERE THE FUTURE PATHWAY OF A PANDEMICS EVOLUTION CANNOT BE PREDICTED. WE WILL AS ALWAYS RELY UPON SMALL DONATIONS TO SUPPLEMENT THE REVENUE OUR VERY SMALL NONPROFIT RECEIVES FROM THE ATTENDEE REGISTRATION FEES THAT WE SEEK TO MAINTAIN AT A MODEST COST LEVEL.
