THE MISSION OF THE MESA REFUGE IS TO PROVIDE TIME, SPACE AND SUPPORT FOR WRITERS AND OTHER CREATIVE PEOPLE TO ADDRESS THE PRESSING ISSUES OF OUR TIME, WITH A CONCENTRATION ON THE ENVIRONMENT, THE ECONOMY AND SOCIAL EQUITY.

IN 2022, WE COMPLETED THE FINAL RENOVATIONS AT OUR FACILITY AND RETURNED TO WELCOMING THREE PEOPLE AT A TIME FOR 2-WEEK WRITING RESIDENCIES. WE HOSTED 36 WRITERS, ARTISTS AND ACTIVISTS, 26 OF WHOM WERE AWARDED FELLOWSHIPS. WE PARTNERED WITH OUR LOCAL RADIO STATION, KWMR, ON PROGRAMS FEATURING INTERVIEWS WITH EACH RESIDENT. WE HOSTED 7 DIY RETREATS, SERVING 8 PRIOR RESIDENTS AND OTHER WRITERS WORKING ON PROJECTS RELATED TO MESA REFUGES AREAS OF FOCUS (THE ENVIRONMENT, ECONOMIC EQUITY, AND SOCIAL JUSTICE). WE LAUNCHED A NEW PILOT PROGRAM CALLED ALUM WEEKS, WHICH SERVED 5 PREVIOUS MESA REFUGE RESIDENTS. WE ALSO OFFERED SEVERAL VIRTUAL AND IN-PERSON AUTHOR EVENTS IN COLLABORATION WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS
