THE FRIENDS OF VALLE DE ORO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE AIMS TO SUPPORT THE REFUGE AND FOSTER A COMMUNITY CONSERVATION ETHIC. WE INVEST IN WILDLIFE AND PEOPLE BY BUILDING PARTNERSHIPS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGED CONSERVATION EFFORTS, SUPPORTING HABITAT RESTORATION, EDUCATIONAL AND INTERPRETIVE PROGRAMMING AND ACCESS TO THE REFUGE, MANAGING MEMBERSHIP AND VOLUNTEER GROUPS, AND RAISING FUNDS FOR REFUGE PROJECTS, PROGRAMS AND FACILITIES.

REFUGE DEVELOPMENT: THE FRIENDS HELP RUN PROGRAMS AND PROVIDE SUPPORT TO REFUGE AND INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT ON AND OFF THE REFUGE TO MAINTAIN VALLE DE ORO NWR'S STATUS AS A NATIONAL MODEL FOR URBAN WILDLIFE REFUGES. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE FRIENDS REFUGE DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN 2021 INCLUDE: GROWING PARTNERSHIPS, PROGRAM ELEMENTS AND CAPACITY TO SUPPORT THE ABQ BACKYARD REFUGE PROGRAM, A COLLABORATIVE PROGRAM AIMED AT SUPPORTING COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO BUILD WILDLIFE HABITAT AND GREEN STORMWATER INFRASTRUCTURE ON PRIVATE LAND IN THE ALBUQUERQUE METRO-AREA; SUPPORTING VOLUNTEER PLANTING EVENTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE RESTORATION WORK ON THE REFUGE'S PROPERTY, PROMOTING ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE EFFORTS IN COORDINATION WITH LOCAL ADVOCACY GROUPS, SUPPORTING ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE EVENTS AND OUTREACH, AND OPENING A NATURE STORE AT THE NEW VISITORS CENTER TO ENHANCE VISITOR EXPERIENCES.

EDUCATION: THE FRIENDS OF VALLE DE ORO NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE (FRIENDS) PROVIDED FUNDS, VOLUNTEER LABOR, AND IN-KIND RESOURCES AS REQUIRED TO MEET THE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM NEEDS AND GOALS OF THE ORGANIZATION AND REFUGE. THE KEY EDUCATION ACTIVITIES AND ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE FRIENDS IN 2021, DESPITE THE CHALLENGES OF THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC, INCLUDE: FILM WORK ON THE REFUGE TO PREPARE MATERIAL FOR EDUCATION; ARTISTIC DIRECTION AND PLANNING FOR MOSAIC ARTS PROJECTS; ONGOING SUPPORT FOR THE BOSQUE EDUCATION GUIDE CURRICULUM; AND PROVIDING THE OPENING DOORS TO NATURE EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM TO AWARD A TOTAL OF $1,750 IN SCHOLARSHIPS TO 3 COLLEGE STUDENTS STUDYING IN AN ENVIRONMENTAL-FOCUSED FIELD.
