FARMERS' MARKETS ARE RUN IN SUCCESSION TO PROVIDE YEAR-ROUND OUTLETS FOR FARMERS AND PRODUCERS WITHIN A 150 MILE RADIUS OF DOWNTOWN KNOXVILLE TO SELL THEIR PRODUCTS, AND TO PROVIDE LOCALLY GROWN PRODUCTS TO OUR COMMUNITY. THE MARKETS SERVE AS BUSINESS INCUBATORS FOR SMALL GROWERS, FOOD PRODUCERS, AND ARTISANS. THE MARKETS ALSO SERVE AS A VENUE AT WHICH WE CAN EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT LOCALLY GROWN FOODS AND WHERE WE CAN PROVIDE PRODUCE INCENTIVE PROGRAMS TO INCREASE ACCESS TO LOCALLY-GROWN PRODUCE. CURRENTLY, PROGRAMS INCLUDE SNAP DOUBLING, NOURISH KIDS, NOURISH MOVES, AND NOURISH WELLNESS, AS WELL AS EDUCATIONAL PARTNER EFFORTS WITH OTHER PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS.
EAST TENNESSEE LOCAL FOOD GUIDE IS PRODUCED BOTH ONLINE AND IN PRINT, LISTING FARMS, CSAS AND FARMERS' MARKETS, AS WELL AS RESTAURANTS AND GROCERS USING LOCAL FOODS, IN A 28 COUNTY REGION OF EAST TENNESSEE. THE GUIDE PROVIDES AN OPPORTUNITY FOR FOOD PRODUCERS AND RETAILERS TO DIRECTLY REACH MORE CONSUMERS, AND IS A RESOURCE TO OUR COMMUNITY TO FIND LOCAL FOOD. THE GUIDES INCLUDE SYMBOLS INDICATING PLACES AND FARMS ACCEPTING SNAP AND WIC VOUCHERS. THE GUIDES ARE DISTRIBUTED TO A WIDE SEGMENT OF THE POPULATION THROUGH THE 28 COUNTIES, INCLUDING AT DEPT OF HUMAN SERVICES, PUBLIC LIBRARIES, AND HEALTH DEPARTMENTS, AS WELL AS THROUGH VISITOR CENTERS, FARMERS' MARKETS, RETAILERS AND TOURIST DESTINATIONS.
NOURISH KIDS PROVIDES A FUN OPPORTUNITY FOR CHILDREN TO ENGAGE IN THE LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM THROUGH CONVERSATIONS DIRECTLY WITH FARMERS, EDUCATIONAL GAMES AND DEMONSTRATIONS, AND EXPOSURE TO NEW FRUITS AND VEGETABLES. IN ADDITION TO PARTICIPATING IN EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES, NOURISH KIDS RECEIVE VOUCHERS TO SPEND AT THE MARKET, ALLOWING THEM TO MAKE THEIR OWN SHOPPING DECISIONS AT THE MARKET. NOURISH KIDS CAN BE FOUND AT FARMERS' MARKETS ACROSS EAST TENNESSEE, AND NOURISH KNOXVILLE BRINGS THIS PROGRAM TO OUR WINTER FARMERS' MARKET AND MARKET SQUARE FARMERS' MARKET. WE ALSO COORDINATE FIELD TRIPS TO THE MARKET FROM COMMUNITY SCHOOLS AND OTHER CHILDREN'S PROGRAMS, PRIMARILY FROM LOW-INCOME AREAS.
