TO STABILIZE, RESTORE AND PRESERVE THE MUKAI AGRICULTURAL COMPLEX, AND PROMOTE ITS CULTURAL CONTRIBUTIONS BY INTERPRETING ITS HISTORY AND CELEBRATING THE ONGOING ROLE OF THIS HISTORIC LANDMARK IN THE COMMUNITY.

HELD EIGHT ON-LINE CLASSES (EACH FOR 5-20 PEOPLE) IN JAPANESE CULTURE, COOKING, THE ARTS & JAPANESE-AMERICAN AFFAIRS. OUTDOOR EVENTS WERE HELD, SERVING APPROXIMATELY 1,000 PEOPLE TOTAL: HAIKU FESTIVAL, JAPAN FESTIVAL AND SOME CULTURAL CLASSES. AN EXTENSIVE HISTORICAL INTERPRETIVE DISPLAY WAS CONSTRUCTED OUTDOORS AND AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC 24/7 FOR SEVERAL MONTHS. SMALL GROUP OPEN HOUSE EVENTS AND PRIVATE TOURS WERE OFFERED IN LIEU OF LARGE GATHERINGS. ABOUT 300 INDIVIDUALS/HOUSEHOLDS CONTRIBUTED TO THE OPERATION OF THE COMPLEX FOR PUBLIC BENEFIT BY DONATING AND/OR BECOMING MEMBERS OF FRIENDS OF MUKAI ENABLING OUTDOOR PORTIONS OF THE COMPLEX TO REMAIN OPEN ALL YEAR AND STAY ON TRACK WITH PLANNING FOR POST-PANDEMIC PROGRAMS AND FURTHER RESTORATION OF FACILITIES. A GREAT DEAL OF PROGRESS WAS MADE TO STRUCTURALLY STABILIZE THE KING COUNTY OWNED MUKAI FRUIT BARRELING PLANT, INVESTING ABOUT 600,000 (MOSTLY STATE OF WA FUNDING) IN IMPROVEMENTS BEGUN IN LATE 2020, PLUS WORKING WITH THE COUNTY ON LONG-TERM PLANNING FOR PRESERVATION AND OWNERSHIP OF THEIR PORTION OF THE MUKAI COMPLEX. STRATEGIZING AND GRANT SEEKING BEGAN IN EARNEST FOR THAT PROJECT, EXPECTED TO COST 2 MILLION OR MORE. THE GROUNDS OF THE MUKAI COMPLEX WERE GRADUALLY IMPROVED THROUGH BETTER GENERAL GROOMING AND CONTINUED IMMACULATE CARE OF THE HISTORIC JAPANESE STROLL GARDEN. PERIOD FURNISHINGS (1930) WERE ADDED TO THE MUKAI HOUSE AND KITCHEN RESTORATION WAS COMPLETED.
