Part 3 - Line 4a
THE 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR IS MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP'S (MVP) NINTH YEAR IN EXISTENCE. WITH COVID-19 RESTRICTIONS LIFTED, STUDENTS WERE ABLE TO COME BACK TO THE SCHOOL SETTING FULL TIME. THE CURRICULUM WAS MODIFIED AGAIN TO GO BACK TO OUR ORIGINAL PROGRAM. THE SCHOOL DAY HOURS RETURNED TO 7:30 AM TO 4:00 PM. IN ORDER TO HELP STUDENTS WITH THE LEARNING LOSS EXPERIENCED DURING THE LAST YEAR AND A HALF, MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP HAS SUSPENDED THE LATIN PROGRAM IN-PERSON FOR A MINIMUM OF 2 YEARS. IN PLACE THE SCHOOL PURCHASED A SUBSCRIPTION TO ROSETTA STONE. THIS WILL ALLOW STUDENTS TO WORK AT HOME AT THEIR OWN PACE FOLLOWING A CALENDAR TO COMPLETE LATIN UNITS ON THEIR TIME FOR HOMEWORK. THE ROSETTA STONE PROGRAM WILL BE MONITORED BY MVP TEACHERS AND STAFF TO MAKE SURE THAT THE STUDENTS ARE KEEPING UP WITH THE WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS. BY TAKING OUT LATIN IN PERSON, MVP WAS ABLE TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF ELA AND MATH PERIODS FROM THE ORIGINAL 7 PERIODS PER WEEK TO 9 PERIODS PER WEEK. THIS INCREASE IN ELA AND MATH WOULD ALLOW TEACHERS TO USE THE 2ND PERIOD OF THE DAY TO WORK ON REINFORCING SKILLS OR WORK WITH STUDENTS IN SMALL GROUPS TO STRENGTHEN THE STANDARDS THAT WERE IDENTIFIED BY THE TEACHER IN THE CLASSROOM USING THEIR OWN ASSESSMENTS, MOCK EXAMS OR MAP TESTING. STUDENTS WHO ARE EITHER ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL), OR STUDENTS THAT HAVE AN IEP, WERE OFFERED TO ATTEND SCHOOL IN THE MORNING FOR ADDITIONAL SUPPORT WITH TEACHERS.IN MARCH AND APRIL, MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP ADMINISTERED THE NYS ELA AND MATH EXAMS TO ALL STUDENTS. MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP ALSO OFFERED FREE VIRTUAL TEST PREP ALLOWING STUDENTS TO ATTEND A 6 WEEK PROGRAM USING GOOGLE CLASSROOM TO RECEIVE TEST PREP INSTRUCTION IN ELA AND MATH PRIOR TO THE EXAM. OUR SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE FOR ELA RESULTED IN THE FOLLOWING PROFICIENCY BY GRADE LEVEL:GRADE 6: 81% TESTED PROFICIENT GRADE 7: 71% TESTED PROFICIENT GRADE 8: 75% TESTED PROFICIENT OUR SCHOOL'S PERFORMANCE FOR MATH RESULTED IN THE FOLLOWING PROFICIENCY BY GRADE LEVEL:GRADE 6: 58% TESTED PROFICIENT GRADE 7: 55% TESTED PROFICIENT OUR 8TH GRADE STUDENTS TAKE THE REGENTS EXAMS IN ALGEBRA 1 MATH AND EARTH SCIENCE. TESTING PREP WAS ALSO OFFERED FOR 6 WEEKS FOR THESE EXAMS PRIOR TO THE EXAM. IN ALGEBRA 1: 80 % OF THE STUDENTS TESTED PROFICIENT IN EARTH SCIENCE: 19% OF THE STUDENTS TESTED PROFICIENT PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR TEACHERS CONTINUED THIS YEAR BY INCORPORATING A COACH ON STAFF TO HELP WITH NEW TEACHERS THAT WERE HIRED. THE COACH WAS ASSIGNED TO SEVEN NEW TEACHERS OFFERING FEEDBACK ON LESSONS OBSERVED AND CONDUCTING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS BI-WEEKLY DURING THE WEDNESDAY PD.
MIDDLE VILLAGE PREP'S SPECIAL EDUCATION TEAM SUPPORTS STUDENTS WHO HAVE AN INDIVIDUAL EDUCATION PLAN ("IEP '') BUT THEY ALSO SUPPORT ALL STUDENTS IN THE CLASSROOM. IN THE INTEGRATED CO-TEACHING ('ICT") SETTING, STUDENTS RECEIVE SMALL GROUP INSTRUCTION AND SCAFFOLD SUPPORT ON ALL ASSIGNMENTS, TESTS AND PROJECTS. IT IS OUR GOAL TO HAVE OUR STUDENTS FEEL CONFIDENT TO COMPLETE WORK INDEPENDENTLY. BY THE TIME THESE STUDENTS REACH THE 8TH GRADE, MANY OF THEIR SERVICES DECREASE BECAUSE WE HAVE PROVIDED INTENSE INSTRUCTION OVER THE 3 YEARS THAT THEY WERE WITH US. THE SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR CONTINUES TO SECURE THE PLACEMENT OF ALL OUTSIDE PROVIDERS AND WORKS WITH THE COMMITTEE ON SPECIAL EDUCATION ("CSE") TO SCHEDULE AND CONFIRM MEETINGS WITH PARENTS TO TAKE PART IN IEP ANNUAL AND TRI-ANNUAL MEETINGS. THE SPECIAL ED TEAM WORKS TOGETHER TO CREATE THE STUDENT REPORT THAT MEMORIALIZES THE STUDENT'S PERFORMANCE AND PROVIDES WHAT THE STUDENTS WOULD BENEFIT FROM RECEIVING TO HELP WITH THEIR SPECIFIC GOALS AND NEEDS IN MIND.WE CONTINUE TO USE THE SERVICE OF THE CHARTER SCHOOL COLLABORATIVE THAT OFFERS MONTHLY WORKSHOPS IN A VARIETY OF ACADEMIC AREAS AND SUPPORTS. TRAINING ALSO OFFERS WAYS TO MAKE PROPER MODIFICATION AND ACCOMMODATION FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE PERFORMING BELOW GRADE LEVEL AND OFFERS WAYS TO SUPPORT STUDENTS EMOTIONALLY AS WELL AS ACADEMICALLY.EVEN THOUGH WE HAVE A GUIDANCE COUNSELOR ON STAFF, MVP TOOK ADVANTAGE OF THE CSE PROVIDING THE SCHOOL WITH A COUNSELOR TO SUPPORT JUST THE MANDATED STUDENTS. THIS PLACEMENT WAS DIFFICULT AS WE WERE NOT ABLE TO FIND A PROVIDER UNTIL JANUARY 2022. WE WERE ALSO NOT ABLE TO FIND AN OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST WHO WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE SERVICES AT THE SCHOOL. MANY OF THE OCCUPATIONAL THERAPISTS STILL WORKED REMOTELY AND WERE NOT ABLE TO COME TO THE SCHOOL. THE SAME IS TRUE FOR OUR IEP MEETINGS HELD WITH FAMILIES, ALL MEETINGS WERE DONE VIRTUALLY WITH THE CSE PROVIDER COMING TO THE SCHOOL TO WORK WITH OUR SPECIAL EDUCATION COORDINATOR TO HOST MEETINGS.
