THE CENTER FOR WORKER JUSTICE UNITES LOW-WAGE WORKERS IN EASTERN IOWA ACROSS RACE AND IMMIGRATION STATUS TO ACHIEVE SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC JUSTICE THROUGH EDUCATION, ORGANIZATION, DIRECT SERVICE, AND COMMUNITY ALLIANCES.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
PROVIDING ASSISTANCE TO THOSE AFFECTED BY IMMIGRATION POLICIES - MANY IMMIGRANT FAMILIES IN OUR COMMUNITIES ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR UNEMPLOYMENT OR FEDERAL STIMULUS FUNDS. THESE ARE FAMILIES THAT WERE WORKING MULTIPLE JOBS JUST TO SURVIVE - WHOSE MINIMUM WAGES DON'T PROVIDE ENOUGH TO SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY, AND WHO NOW HAVE NO INCOME TO PAY FOR RENT, UTILITIES, OR BASIC NEEDS. THAT'S WHY CWJ ALLIES ARE LAUNCHING A CAMPAIGN TO PASS ALONG OUR FEDERAL STIMULUS CHECKS TO OUR NEIGHBORS WHO NEED THEM MOST OUR GOAL IS TO PASS ALONG PAYMENTS OF 400-600 PER FAMILY TO LOCAL COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN CRISIS, STARTING WITH THOSE WHO ARE INELIGIBLE FOR ANY ASSISTANCE. CWJ WILL DISTRIBUTE THESE COVID-19 CRISIS DONATIONS DIRECTLY TO LOCAL FAMILIES WHO NEED THEM, WITH OVERSIGHT FROM A COMMITTEE OF LEADERS.
PROTECTING AND IMPROVING HOUSING OPTIONS FOR LOW-INCOME RESIDENTS - CWJ HAS ORGANIZED A NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION IN ONE OF IOWA CITY'S MOST ECONOMICALLY VULNERABLE MOBILE HOME COMMUNITIES AND RESIDENTS OF THAT COMMUNITY HAVE WON A CONDITIONAL ZONING AGREEMENT TO DEVELOP A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD OF QUALITY HOMES AT AN AFFORDABLE PRICE. WE HAVE ALSO EDUCATED MORE THAN 100 LOW-WAGE WORKERS ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS AS TENANTS AND CONDUCTED DOZENS OF HOME VISITS TO IOWA CITY'S MOST LOW-INCOME NEIGHBORHOODS TO INVITE OUR NEIGHBORS TO JOIN CWJ AND TO PROVIDE INFORMATION ON RIGHTS OF HOME RENTING RESIDENTS.
DEFENDING WORKER'S RIGHTS TO PROPER PAYMENT AND SAFE WORK - THE CENTER FOR WORKER JUSTICE HAS LED EFFORTS TO EDUCATE WORKERS ABOUT THEIR RIGHTS AND STAND WITH WORKERS WHO ARE VICTIMS OF WAGE THEFT TO RECOVER THE WAGES THEY HAVE EARNED. WE'VE RECOVERED ALMOST 130,000 SO FAR. WORKERS WHO COME TO THE CWJ LEARN HOW TO GATHER THE EVIDENCE THEY NEED TO PROVE THEIR CASE AND FIND OUT WHAT STEPS THEY CAN TAKE WITH THE SUPPORT OF CWJ MEMBERS AND ALLIES TO SEEK JUSTICE.
