THE MISSION OF THE FRIENDS OF THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER IS TO OPERATE AN ART CENTER TO PROVIDE HIGH QUALITY EDUCATION AND INSTRUCTION IN THE FINE ARTS TO BOTH CHILDREN AND ADULTS OF ALL LEVELS, TO CONDUCT OUTREACH PROGRAMS IN ARTS EDUCATION, AND TO OTHERWISE PROMOTE AND FOSTER ARTS EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITY. PRIOR TO THE COVID PANDEMIC, THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER PROVIDED INSTRUCTIONAL FINE ARTS CLASSES IN THE VISUAL ARTS TO ALMOST 2,400 ADULTS AND CHILDREN EACH YEAR. APPROXIMATELY 55 ART CLASSES ARE OFFERED WEEKLY, MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY, IN THE FOLLOWING MEDIUMS: ACRYLIC, OIL AND WATERCOLOR PAINTING (ABSTRACT AND REPRESENTATIONAL), FIGURE DRAWING AND PAINTING, FIGURE SCULPTURE, PASTELS, CERAMICS (WHEEL POTTERY AND HAND BUILDING), COLLAGE, AND MIXED MEDIA. DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THE BRENTWOOD ART CENTER SUSPENDED IN-PERSON CLASSES IN MARCH 2020 AND PIVOTED TO PROVIDING ART EDUCTION ON-LINE WITH A REDUCED NUMBER OF CLASSES AND STUDENTS. PROVIDE INSTRUCTIONAL FINE ARTS CLASSES IN THE VISUAL ARTS TO APPROXIMATELY 2400 CHILDREN, TEENS, ADULTS AND SENIORS.
PROVIDE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO LOW-INCOME ADULTS AND CHILDREN BY REDUCING OR ELIMINATING SCHOOL FEES TO ENSURE EQUITABLE ACCESS THE ARTS. AWARDED APPROXIMATELY $34,000 IN FEE REDUCTIONS.
PRIOR TO THE CLOSURES IN MARCH 2020 DUE TO THE PANDEMIC, THREE TEACHING ARTISTS SPENT MORE THAN 150 TEACHING HOURS PROVIDING FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION AT NO COST TO VETERANS AT THE WESTWOOD AND LONG BEACH VETERANS ADMINISTRATION CAMPUSES. SINCE THE CLOSURES, ONE FACULTY MEMBER HAS PROVIDED 66 HOURS OF ONLINE FINE ARTS INSTRUCTION AT NO COST TO VETERANS AT THE LONG BEACH VETERANS ADMINISTRATION CAMPUS. IN NOVEMBER 2021, A SECOND TEACHING ARTIST WILL RESUME IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION FOR VETERANS AT THE WESTWOOD VETERANS ADMINISTRATION.
