YOUTH DEVELOPMENT THE YMCA OF RAPID CITY IS COMMITTED TO NURTURING THE POTENTIAL OF EVERY CHILD AND TEEN. THE Y OFFERS PROGRAMS LIKE AFTERSCHOOL, SUMMER DAY CAMP, CHILDCARE, YOUTH SPORTS, AND SWIMMING WHICH STRIVE TO HELP YOUTH GROW SOCIALLY, PHYSICALLY, AND EMOTIONALLY. IN 2021, 7,490 YOUTH AND TEENS PARTICIPATED IN OUR PROGRAMS. WE OPERATED 16 CHILDCARE SITES AND 8 OF OUR SCHOOL AGE SITES WERE OFFERED IN COORDINATION WITH RAPID CITY AREA SCHOOLS. ADDITIONALLY, THE YMCA OPERATES YOUTH INSTITUTE DIGITAL MEDIA FOR TEENS. ALL PROGRAMS ARE FULLY LICENSED WITH THE SD DEPARTMENT OF SOCIAL SERVICES. THE YMCA STRIVES TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE PARENTS, STAFF, AND VOLUNTEERS WORK TOGETHER IN HELPING ALL CHILDREN GROW UP HEALTHY, HAPPY, AND STRONG. SCHOLARSHIPS ARE AVAILABLE FOR ALL YMCA YOUTH PROGRAMS. IN ADDITION TO EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT, THE Y PROVIDES OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT THROUGH AQUATICS, SUMMER CAMP, LEADERSHIP CLUBS, AND YOUTH SPORTS.
HEALTHY LIVING THE YMCA OF RAPID CITY CONTINUES TO BE A LEADER IN HEALTHY ACTIVITIES FOR ITS COMMUNITY. THESE PROGRAMS SERVE THE PURPOSE OF BUILDING A HEALTHY MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT FOR ALL. THEY Y BRINGS FAMILIES AND COMMUNITY CLOSER TOGETHER, ENCOURAGES GOOD HEALTH THROUGH FITNESS, SPORTS, SWIMMING, WELLNESS CLASSES, AND SPECIALTY INTERESTS LIKE HIKING, SNOWSHOEING, AND DANCE. IN 2021, THE Y PROVIDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND SUBSIDIZED PROGRAM SERVICES FOR PROGRAMMING THAT INCLUDED MONTHLY HIKING TRIPS OF ADULTS AGED 55+, PARKINSON'S CLASSES FOR NEWLY DIAGNOSED, DAILY GROUP EXERCISE CLASSES, SWIM LESSONS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS, SWIM WELLNESS COURSES, AND MUCH MORE. IN TOTAL, 18,935 INDIVIDUALS USED YMCA FACILITIES LAST YEAR.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY IS PART OF THE Y'S EVERYDAY WORK. THE YMCA OF RAPID CITY BELIEVES IN GIVING BACK AND SUPPORTING THE MOST VULNERABLE IN THE COMMUNITY AND HAS BEEN DOING SO FOR 74 YEARS. Y PROGRAMS SUCH AS THE JUMP START CHILD CARE PROGRAM FOR TEEN MOMS, ONE HEART CHILDCARE FOR PARENTS SEEKING TO BREAK OUT OF HOMELESSNESS, ADDITIONAL, AND POVERTY; PROVIDING FOOD FOR LOCAL WOMEN AND CHILDREN'S SHELTER (WAVI), DAILY MEAL PROGRAM FOR SENIORS, YOUTH SPONSORSHIPS, AND GRANT FUNDED AFTER-SCHOOL AND SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR LOW INCOME FAMILIES.
