A COLLECTIVE EFFORT OF COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST YOUTH CLUB MEMBERS IN THEIR EDUCATION OF STEAM CAREERS BY FACILITATING A LIVESTOCK SHOW AND AUCTION. ANIMALS ARE JUDGED BY A PANEL OF STOCK EXPERTS FOR THE PURPOSE OF DETERMINING THE QUALITY OF LIVESTOCK SHOWN BY CLUB MEMBERS, AND ANIMALS ARE SOLD TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC IN AN AUCTION.
PETTING ZOOS ARE A HANDS-ON APPROACH TO INTRODUCING ANIMALS TO YOUNG MEMBERS TO HELP THEM FEEL COMFORTABLE AROUND A VARIETY OF ANIMALS WHILE ENRICHING THEIR AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION. PETTING ZOOS ARE ALSO AN EFFECTIVE MARKETING TOOL FOR SPREADING THE MISSION OF ALASKA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS TO YOUNGER COMMUNITY MEMBERS WHO OTHERWISE MAY NOT HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO INTERACT WITH ANIMALS IN A PERSONAL SETTING.
YOUTH ARE GIVEN THE OPPORTUNITY TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUTH LITTER PATROLS PROVIDED BY ALPAR BECAUSE OF THEIR MEMBERSHIP WITH ALASKA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT. THESE PATROLS OFFER SUMMER EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES TO CHILDREN AGED 14-17 AND CONSIST OF THE CLEANUP OF TRAILS AND ROADWAYS WHILE SPREADING THE WORD ABOUT KEEPING ALASKA FREE OF LITTER.
