THE MISTAKE ROOM PRODUCES AND PRESENTS A DIVERSE AND INTERNATIONAL PROGRAM OF ART EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AND PUBLICATIONS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
WE WORKED WITH THOMAS HIRSCHHORN WHO IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S MOST RENOWNED AND RESPECTED CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS. HIS WORK HAS BEEN PRESENTED AT ALMOST EVERY MAJOR INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM AND LARGE SCALE BIENNALE AND HE PIONEERED NOT ONLY INSTALLATION ART IN THE 1990'S BUT ALSO PUBLIC SCULPTURE AND COLLAGE WORK. UNTIL 2016, HIRSCHHORN HAD NOT HAD A SOLO SHOW IN LA AND THE MISTAKE ROOM STAGED A SOLO EXHIBITION IN FALL 2016 COMPRISING OF A LARGE-SCALE IMMERSIVE INSTALLATION. IN ADDITION TO THE EXHIBITION WE HOSTED A HOST OF SEMINARS WITH LOCAL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS FROM DIFFERENT UNIVERSITIES. THE EXHIBITION RECEIVED MANY REVIEWS AND HAD THE LARGEST ATTENDANCE OF ANY OF OUR SHOWS THIS YEAR
THE VIDEO SHOW TITLED "HISTORIES OF A VANISHING PRESENT" INCLUDED OVER 10 EMERGING ARTISTS FROM MORE THAN 8 COUNTRIES WHO ARE PIONEERING VIDEO ART. STAGED AS A DYNAMIC ROTATING SERIES OF PRESENTATIONS, THE EXHIBITION ATTRACTED DIFFERENT AUDIENCES FOR EACH ROTATION AND ALLOWED US TO ENGAGE SCHOLARS TO RESPOND TO THE WORKS THROUGH LECTURES AND PRESENTATIONS. DESPITE HAVING SHOWN INTERNATIONALLY, FOR MANY OF THE ARTISTS INCLUDED IN THE VIDEO SHOW, THIS WAS THE FIRST TIME THEIR WORK HAD BEEN PRESENTED IN LA.
WE ALSO STAGED AN EXHIBITION BEYOND OUR SPACE, IN GUADALAJARA, MEXICO, THAT AIMED TO BRING NEW ART TO INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCES. WE WORKED WITH LA ARTIST HENRY TAYLOR TO PRESENT A SHOW OF PAINTINGS AND INSTALLATIONS WHICH DREW CRITICAL ACCLAIM AND ALSO ALLOWED OUR PROGRAM TO EXTEND BEYOND BORDERS. AFTER HENRY'S PRESENTATION WITH US, HE WENT ON TO BE INCLUDED IN THE WHITNEY BIENNIAL AND OTHER PRESTIGIOUS EXHIBITIONS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
IN ADDITION TO THESE MAJOR THREE EXHIBITION PROJECTS, TMR ALSO CONTINUED ITS INTL. CURATORIAL RESIDENCY AND BROUGHT THREE GLOBAL CURATORS TO LA FOR LECTURES AND STUDIO VISITS. THIS YEAR WE BROUGHT MAGNOLIA DE LA GARZA FROM MEXICO CITY, CLARA KIM FROM LONDON, UK, AND DIANA BETANCOURT FROM DHAKA, BANGLADESH. IN AN EFFORT TO CONTINUE EXPANDING THE WAY WE REACH AUDIENCES AND BETTER SERVE MULTIPLE PUBLICS THROUGH ART AND CULTURE, TMR ALSO LAUNCHED THREE PROGRAM INITIATIVES. THE FIRST WAS A NEW SERIES OF PERFORMANCES DEVOTED TO SUPPORTING THE WORK OF ARTISTS IN DANCE AND CHOREOGRAPHY. THROUGH A MONTH-LONG RESIDENCY IN OUR SPACE, TWO MOVEMENT ARTISTS WERE ALLOWED TO USE OUR SITE FOR REHEARSAL AND ALSO PRODUCED A SERIES OF PERFORMANCES THAT GAVE VISITORS A DIFFERENT UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROCESS OF MAKING DANCE FOR A GALLERY SPACE. WE ALSO LAUNCHED AN EXPERIMENTAL SUMMER SCHOOL IN GUADALAJARA, MEXICO, WHERE WE SENT AMERICAN AND INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS TO TEACH A SERIES OF ROTATING WORKSHOPS FOR EMERGING ARTISTS IN MEXICO IN A CITY WHERE THERE IS CURRENTLY NO MAJOR ART SCHOOL. WE HOPE THAT IN DOING THESE TYPES OF EVENTS WE CAN DEVELOP A MEANINGFUL EDUCATIONAL COMPONENT THAT IS CROSS-CULTURAL AND ADVANCES OUR UNDERSTANDING OF OTHER CULTURES. LASTLY, AS ANOTHER WAY TO BRING AN INTERNATIONAL ART PROGRAM TO LA, WE LAUNCHED TMR AS HUB WHICH IS AN INVITATIONAL INITIATIVE THAT INVITES OTHER ART SPACES FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO TAKE UP A NON-HOSTED RESIDENCY IN OUR SPACE TO PRESENT A SHOW. WE WORKED WITH GALERIE CHANTAL CROUSEL AND PARAMO FOR THIS FIRST ITERATION. WE HOPE TO CONTINUE THESE TYPES OF INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGES IN YEARS TO COME.
