WE SENT HUNDREDS OF GROCERY STORE GIFT CARDS DIRECTLY TO STUDENTS AND PROVIDED STIPENDS FOR INTERNET SERVICE. THE MOVE UP INITIATIVE, BEGUN IN 2019, CONTINUES TO PROVIDE CAREER TRAINING WITH OUR NANNYUP AND HABLA MÁS! PROGRAMS. NANNYUP GIVES TALENTED, NURTURING CHILDCARE PROVIDERS THE OPPORTUNITY TO ADVANCE IN THEIR CAREERS AS NANNIES. HABLA MÁS!, PROVIDES UPWARD SCHOLARS STUDENTS THE OPPORTUNITY TO MAKE A STEADY SOURCE OF INCOME AS SPANISH LANGUAGE COACHES. THE INITIATIVE NOW INCLUDES ANOTHER NEW PROGRAM - BUSINESSUP. IN PARTNERSHIP WITH CENTRO COMMUNITY PARTNERS, BUSINESSUP OFFERS BOOTCAMP WORKSHOPS TO PROVIDE STUDENTS THE SKILLS THEY NEED TO BEGIN THEIR OWN BUSINESSES.
SCHOLARSHIPS SCHOLARSHIPS ARE PROVIDED TO UNDERSERVED STUDENTS WHO HAVE ATTENDED ADULT SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY-BASED ORGANIZATIONS IN SAN MATEO COUNTY SO THEY CAN CONTINUE THEIR EDUCATION IN COMMUNITY COLLEGE. UPWARD SCHOLARS PROVIDES SCHOLARSHIPS FOR LAPTOP COMPUTERS, TEXTBOOKS, TRANSPORTATION PARKING AND FOOD VOUCHERS FOR USE IN CAMPUS DINING FACILITIES.
STUDENT SAFETY NET IN 2020 WE ADDED A NEW PROGRAM TO BETTER MEET THE NEEDS OF THE PEOPLE WE SERVE TODAY AND MEET THE FUTURE CHALLENGES OF OUR CHANGING ECONOMIC LANDSCAPE, ESPECIALLY GIVEN THE PANDEMIC'S DIRECT IMPACT ON OUR STUDENTS. WE LAUNCHED OUR FIRST EVER STUDENT SAFETY NET FUND (SNF) TO SUPPORT STUDENTS HARDEST HIT BY THE PANDEMIC. STUDENTS APPLIED TO RECEIVE SUPPORT FROM THE SNF TO HELP THEM COVER EXPENSES RELATED TO RENT, MEDICAL CARE, CHILDCARE, UTILITIES, OR FOOD, SO ALTHOUGH THEY LOST JOBS AND WAGES, THEY COULD CONTINUE WITH THEIR COLLEGE COURSES.
