TO CATCH STUDENTS UP TO READING LEVEL BEFORE THEY REACH MIDDLE SCHOOL, WHERE INCIDENTS OF DRUG ABUSE AND DELINQUENT BEHAVIORS HAVE A DIRECT LINK TO DROP-OUT RATES AND INCARCERATION.

CATCH UP & READ OPERATES A READING INTERVENTION PROGRAM. THE PROGRAM, LAUNCHED AT SUDIE WILLIAMS ELEMENTARY (DISD), WAS DEVELOPED OUT OF CONCERN FOR STUDENTS WHO ADVANCE TO MIDDLE SCHOOL, BUT ARE OFTEN TWO GRADES BEHIND READING LEVEL; THEREBY REDUCING THEIR CHANCE FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS OR GRADUATION. THE GOAL FOR CATCH UP & READ IS TO OFFER "WRAP AROUND" SUPPORT PROGRAMS FOR THE STUDENTS, AIMING FOR LONG-TERM SUSTAINED READING AND ACADEMIC SUCCESS. BY THE END OF A 12-WEEK SESSION, TESTING RESULTS INDICATE AN AVERAGE READING IMPROVEMENT OF ONE FULL GRADE LEVEL.
