THE MISSION OF TEXAS JAIL PROJECT IS TO EMPOWER INCARCERATED PEOPLE IN COUNTY JAILS BY LIFTING THEIR VOICES THROUGH STORIES, TESTIMONIES, AND COMMUNITY BUILDING. WE HOLD JAILS AS WELL AS THE ENTIRE CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT SYSTEM ACCOUNTABLE - INFORMING THE PUBLIC AND LAWMAKERS ABOUT CIVIL RIGHTS VIOLATIONS, STRUCTURAL RACISM, AND THE PUNITIVE ATTITUDES UNDERLYING THE MISTREATMENT AND MEDICAL NEGLECT INSIDE TEXAS COUNTY JAILS.

(1)AS PART OF OUR CORE NARRATIVE SHIFT AND STORYTELLING WORK, WE LAUNCHED A DIGITAL ARCHIVE OF 100 STORIES OF INCARCERATED PEOPLE ON SHEDDINGLIGHT.IN (2)WE CONTRIBUTED TO 41 STATE AND NATIONAL NEWS STORIES - BOTH PRINT, TV AND ONLINE - ON COUNTY JAILS INCLUDING 3 OP-EDS. (3)WE FACILITATED LEGISLATIVE TESTIMONY BY 7 COMMUNITY MEMBERS AND EXPERTS PLUS 2 TJP STAFF MEMBERS. WE ALSO FACILITATED PUBLIC COMMENTS BY 12 COMMUNITY MEMBERS AT COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT AND STATE AGENCIES. ONE TJP STAFF MEMBER WHO'S ALSO A COMMUNITY MEMBER PROVIDED WEEKLY PUBLIC COMMENT AT THEIR COUNTY COMMISSIONERS COURT FOR OVER 40 WEEKS. (4)WE LAUNCHED AND RAN A REVOLVING COMMUNITY BAIL FUND IN SMITH COUNTY TO SUPPORT PRETRIAL INDIVIDUALS INCARCERATED IN SMITH COUNTY JAIL. (5)AS PART OF OUR ADVOCACY AND CASE WORK, WE RECEIVED AND RESPONDED TO OVER 480 EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS ON OUR HELPLINE. (6)WE RECORDED OVER 1200 PHONE INTERVIEWS, JAIL EMAILS AND LETTERS FROM INCARCERATED INDIVIDUALS AND THEIR LOVED ONES. (7)WE FILED OVER 55 COMPLAINTS WITH VARIOUS STATE AGENCIES AND REFERRED OVER 50 TO COALITION ALLIES. (8)WE DISBURSED MUTUAL AID TO OVER 300 INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES DIRECTLY IMPACTED BY PRETRIAL DETENTION AND THE COUNTY JAIL AND MENTAL HEALTH SYSTEM. (9)WE CONTRIBUTED TO 1 DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE COMPLAINT ON CIVIL AND HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION OF PRETRIAL INDIVIDUALS DETAINED UNDER OPERATION LONE STAR THAT WAS FILED BY A STATEWIDE COALITION OF OVER 50 CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND IMMIGRATION RIGHTS GROUPS. (10)WE PROVIDED BRIEFINGS TO THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE, COUNTY AFFAIRS COMMITTEES AND BLACK AND LATINO CAUCUSES IN THE TEXAS LEGISLATURE (HOUSE). (11)WE PROVIDED ONE BRIEFING TO THE GOVERNOR'S DISABILITY RIGHTS COMMITTEE ON THE STATE OF PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES IN TEXAS COUNTY JAILS. (12)AS PART OF OUR GOVERNMENT TRANSPARENCY AND ACCOUNTABILITY WORK, WE FILED MULTIPLE PUBLIC INFORMATION REQUESTS IN 5 COUNTIES SPANNING MULTIPLE STATE AGENCIES.


IN RESPONSE TO THE WINTER STORM URI, THE ORGANIZATION DISBURSED MUTUAL AID VIA CASH TRANSFERS TO 220 INDIVIDUALS.
