PREVENT SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH IN H.S. STUDENTS IN SAN ANTONIO AREA BY PROVIDING HEART SCREENINGS.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST (SCA) IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF NON-TRAUMATIC DEATH IN YOUTH, HAPPENING WITHOUT WARNING AND PROVING FATAL IN 92% OF THE CASES. ONE IN 300 TEENS IS AT RISK FOR SCA, ACCORDING TO THE JOURNAL OF ATHLETIC TRAINING. FOUNDED IN 2011, AUGUSTHEART HAS SCREENED ALMOST 47,000 TEENS AND IDENTIFIED HUNDREDS OF TEENS WITH HIDDEN HEART CONDITIONS BY UTILIZING A LOW-COST CARDIOVASCULAR SCREENING MODEL USING VOLUNTEER CARDIOLOGISTS AND PAID MEDICAL TECHNICIANS TO SCREEN TEENS. THE SCREENINGS INCLUDE AN ELECTROCARDIOGRAM (ECG) AND, IF NECESSARY, AN ECHOCARDIOGRAM (ECHO). THESE TESTS ALLOW CARDIOLOGISTS TO EVALUATE THE STRUCTURE AND ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF THE HEART. THIS SCREENING WOULD COST OVER $1,500 IN A DOCTOR'S OFFICE. IN THE YEAR ENDING 2022, AUGUSTHEART SCREENED ALMOST 7,500 STUDENTS AND MADE 55 REFERRALS. AUGUSTHEART IS SAVING LIVES! THERE IS NO OTHER ORGANIZATION IN SAN ANTONIO OFFERING FREE ECG HEART SCREENINGS FOR TEENS.
