ALIGNING PROGRAMMING OBJECTIVES TO U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES HEALTHY PEOPLE 2030 AND OREGON HEALTH AUTHORITY'S HEALTHIER TOGETHER OREGON 2020-2025 GOALS:1. HEALTHY BEHAVIORS: INCREASE KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIORS TOWARD NUTRITION AND HEALTHY EATING2. HEALTHY POPULATIONS: INCREASE NUMBERS OF ADOLESCENTS AND TIME SPENT IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY3. WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT: INCREASE EXPOSURE TO HEALTHCARE CAREER PATHWAYS4. COMMUNITY HEALTH: INCREASE ADVOCACY AND PROMOTION OF EQUITY AND JUSTICE5. HEALTH LITERACY: INCREASE BASIC HEALTH KNOWLEDGE AND ACCESS TO RESOURCESMIKE PROGRAM PROVIDES MENTORED HEALTH EDUCATION SERVICES IN COMMUNITIES MOST AFFECTED BY HEALTH DISPARITIES AND ADVERSE HEALTH OUTCOMES. MIKE PROGRAM INCREASED THE TOTAL NUMBER OF MENTORED HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS BY 66% DURING THE 2021-2022 ACADEMIC YEAR, EXPANDING PROGRAMMING AT THREE SITES AND LAUCHING A ONE NEW SITE. MIKE PROGRAM SERVED 178 STUDENTS WITH 30 VOLUNTEER NEAR-AGE MENTORS AND COORDINATED MORE THAN A DOZEN GUEST SPEAKERS TO INTRODUCE YOUTH TO HEALTHCARE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.MIKE PROGRAM DEVELOPED PROGRAMMING BASED ON STUDENT INTEREST SURVEYS TO BETTER RESPOND TO THE NEEDS OF STUDENTS AND THEIR SCHOOLS. MIKE INTRODUCED AN ADVOCACY AND PUBLIC OUTREACH CAMPAIGN AT OUR RURAL OREGON SITE THAT GENERATED SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION THAT INCLUDED LOCAL NEWSPAPER COVERAGE AND PRESENTATIONS AT THE CITY HALL.
MIKE PROGRAM LAUNCHED A FOCUSED PILOT PROGRAM AT A LARGE URBAN PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL TO PROVIDE STUDENTS WITH TRAINING AND CAREER OPTIONS BY BRINGING IN HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS INTO THEIR CLASSROOM. MIKE PROGRAM SURVEYED THE STUDENTS TO GAIN INSIGHT INTO THEIR HEALTH TOPIC AND CAREER INTERESTS, THEN DEVELOPED PROGRAMMING TO MEET THOSE INTERESTS. MIKE PROGRAM PROVIDED STUDENTS WITH INFORMATION ON A VARIETY OF TRAINING PATHS TO CONSIDER, ALONG WITH A VARIETY OF CAREERS IN HEALTHCARE INCLUDING FIRST-LEVEL OPTIONS AS CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANTS, PHYSICAL THERAPISTS, RADIOLOGICAL TECHNICIANS, PHYSICIAN ASSISTANTS, NATURAL MEDICINE SPECIALISTS, SOCIAL WORKERS, MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDERS AND MANY OPTIONS IN NURSING.
MIKE PROGRAM MENTOR MADELEINE DUNCAN, A MEDICAL STUDENT AT WESTERN UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES-COMP NW, WHO MENTORED TWO YEARS WITH OUR RURAL OREGON PROJECT WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE U.S. PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE COMMISSIONED CORPS OF THE U.S. OFFICE OF THE SURGEON GENERAL, U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES FOR HER WORK IN PUBLIC HEALTH IN RURAL COMMUNITIES. DUNCAN SERVED AS THE LEAD MENTOR, COORDINATING PROGRAMMING WITH MIKE AND HER FELLOW MEDICAL STUDENTS TO BRING SCIENCE-BASED INFORMATION AND ACTIVITIES TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS AT SWEET HOME HIGH SCHOOL. SHE WAS AWARDED THE PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE EXCELLENCE AWARD FOR 2022 BASED ON HER WORK WITH MIKE PROGRAM.
