Describe the Organization's Mission:
Part 3 - Line 1
BEACON HILL SUPPLEMENTS EXISTING SCHOOL SYSTEMS AND PREPARES STUDENTS AND FAMILIES FOR SUCCESS BY PROVIDING READING AND MATH TUTORING, PARENT EDUCATION, COLLEGE PREPARATION, AND ENRICHMENT ACTIVITIES FOR STUDENTS IN SOUTH DALLAS AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
BEACON HILL PROVIDES IN-SCHOOL LITERACY TUTORING FOR K- 5TH GRADE STUDENTS IN SOME OF THE LOWEST PERFORMING ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS IN THE DALLAS AREA. EACH CHILD RECEIVES 2-3 HOURS OF TUTORING PER WEEK FOR 30 WEEKS. TUTORING IS PROVIDED BY TRAINED TEACHERS AT A 1:3 TEACHER/STUDENT RATIO USING PROVEN, STRUCTURED CURRICULUM.
BEACON HILL'S AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAMMING CHANGES THE LIVES OF CHILDREN & PARENTS THROUGH: 1. ASSISTED MATH (PRESCHOOL-2ND GRADE): TUTORING TO YOUNG LEARNERS AT A STUDENT TO TEACHER RATIO OF 3 TO 1. PROVEN MATERIALS ARE USED TO CONDUCT A MATH ASSESSMENT, DEVELOP A STUDENT PROFILE AND THEN PROVIDE INDIVIDUALIZED, SELF-PACED TUTORING. 2. MATH FOR INDEPENDENT LEARNERS (3RD-12TH GRADE): AS STUDENTS PROGRESS IN THEIR CAPACITY THEY ARE MOVED TO A MORE INDEPENDENT LEARNING ENVIRONMENT WHERE THE TUTORING RATIO IS 4 TO 1. 3. ASSISTED READING LEARNERS (PRESCHOOL-2ND GRADE): USES THE SAME APPROACH AS THE IN-SCHOOL LITERACY TUTORING PROGRAM (ABOVE). 4. READING FOR COMPREHENSION (3RD - 12TH GRADE). THIS PROGRAM IS TAUGHT USING THE GIDEON CURRICULUM AT A 4 TO 1 STUDENT/TEACHER RATIO. 5. PARENT WORKSHOPS - PARENT WORKSHOPS ARE HELD QUARTERLY TO INFORM AND ENGAGE PARENTS IN THEIR CHILD'S EDUCATIONAL JOURNEY.
SUMMER BRIDGE PROGRAM: AT BEACON HILL, LEARNING DOES NOT TAKE A SUMMER VACATION. THROUGH THE SUMMER BRIDGE ENRICHMENT CAMPS, STUDENTS ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE THE LEARNING PROCESS IN A MEANINGFUL, FUN, AND ENGAGED MANNER IN THE SAME PROGRAMS OFFERED AFTER-SCHOOL. THIS AVOIDS THE 10-WEEK GAP IN EDUCATION WHICH CAUSES A DETERIORATION OF WHAT THE STUDENT LEARNED IN THE PREVIOUS YEAR.
