THE PURPOSE OF THE WISCONSIN ACADEMIC DECATHLON IS TO DEVELOP AND PROVIDE ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS, CURRICULUM, AND ASSESSMENT TO PROMOTE LEARNING AND ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE THROUGH TEAMWORK AMONG STUDENTS OF ALL ACHIEVEMENT LEVELS. ACADEMIC DECATHLON IS DEDICATED TO THE GOAL OF STRENGTHENING THE ACADEMIC CAPABILITIES OF YOUTH BY SUPPORTING EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES. ONE WAY TO MEET THIS GOAL IS TO IDENTIFY, RECOGNIZE AND REWARD EXCELLENCE IN ACADEMICS. ACADEMIC DECATHLON WAS CREATED WITH THE FOCUS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING WELL ROUNDED INDIVIDUALS AND PROVIDING AN ANTIDOTE TO INTELLECTUAL APATHY AND UNDER ACHIEVEMENT. DECATHLON OPENS THE DOOR TO ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT FOR ALL STUDENTS. GENERAL PROGRAMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS ARE AS FOLLOWS:COMPETITIONS: FUNDS WERE USED TO COORDINATE AND MANAGE THREE STATEWIDE LEVELS OF COMPETITION.LOCAL COMPETITION: 108 TEAMS REGISTERD TO PARTICIPATE IN THE 34TH ANNUAL WI ACADEMIC DECATHALON. THIS YEAR'S OVERALL CURRICULAR THEME WAS WORLD WAR II.REGIONAL COMPETITION (JANUARY 6, 2017): 50 TEAMS ADVANCED TO THE SECOND ROUND OF STATE-WIDE COMPETITION. TEN SCHOOLS WERE ASSIGNED TO EACH OF THE FIVE HOST SITES. THE KRESS FDN WAS THE SPONSOR OF THE UWGB SITE. STATE COMPETITION (MARCH 2-3, 2017): THE 2-DAY COMPETITION RETURNED TO THE WILDERNESS RESORT/GLACIER CANYON CENTER IN WI DELLS. WISCONSIN'S TOP 20 TEAMS, DETERMINED BY SCORE AND DIVISION SIZE, COMPETED IN THE 10 EVENTS AND THE SUPER QUIZ RELAY. ON THE CLOSE OF THE SECOND DAY, AN AWARDS BANQUET WAS HELD IN THE GCCC BALLROOM.NATIONAL COMPETITION IN MADISON, WISCONSIN: WILMONT UNION HS, COACHED BY DON SERKOWSKI AND KAITLYN KELEHER,CAPTURED 25 MEDALS, FOUR CAHS SCHOLARSHIPS AND PLACES 2ND IN THE SUPER QUIZ RELAY. THEY PLACED 2ND AMONG THE DIVISION II TEAMS AND 10TH OVERALL IN THE NATION.SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS: SINCE MARCH 1996, WIAD HAS ISSUED CASH AND DIRECT SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS. DIRECT SCHOLARSHIPS WERE OFFERED BY 20 WI COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. THE SCHOLARSHIPS (EXCEEDING $239,500 IN VALUE) WERE AVAILABLE TO THE STATE OVERALL WINNERS FROM THE MARCH COMPETITION, AS WELL AS TO OUR JANUARY REGIONAL TOP SCHOLARS. TWO OF THE DIRECT SCHOLARSHIPS HAVE BEEN CLAIMED TO ATTEND CARROLL COLLEGE IN THE FALL. EINHORN FAMILY FDN SCHOLARSHIPS WERE AWARDED TO THE TOP STUDENT ON EACH OF THE 20 TEAMS AT THE STATE COMPETITION IN MARCH FOR THE 4TH YEAR IN A ROW. 20 CASH AWARD CERTIFICATES WERE PRESENTED FOR A TOTAL OF $4,000.
