Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
SALMON UNLIMITED-WISCONSIN, INC. IS AN ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO PROMOTING AND PRESERVING THE TRADITION OF FRESH WATER FISHING. THE MAIN WAY WE TRY TO ACCOMPLISH THIS IS THROUGH EDUCATION. SALMON UNLIMITED HOSTS SEVERAL FISHING EVENTS WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN LEARN ABOUT FISH AND FISHING TECHNIQUES, PUBLISHES A NEWSLETTER WITH EDUCATIONAL CONTENT, SPONSORS LEARNING EVENTS FOR CHILDREN, AND PROVIDES FISH POPULATION DATA AND EVEN FUNDS TO THE WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES (WDNR) TO MAINTAIN FISH STOCKS. MEETINGS ARE CALLED FOR THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.
SALMON-A-RAMA THIS IS A NINE DAY FISHING TOURNAMENT AND IS HELD IN MID-JULY. ALTHOUGH SALMON-A-RAMA GENERATES SOME REVENUE FOR THE ORGANIZATION, IT ALSO SERVES AS AN EXCELLENT PLATFORM TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC, BOTH OLD AND YOUNG. WE ALSO HAVE VOLUNTEERS ON HAND TO EXPLAIN WHAT SALMON AND TROUT FISHING IS ALL ABOUT AS PEOPLE LOOK AT THE LARGE FISH ON DISPLAY IN OUR FREEZERS. DUE TO ONGOING PANDEMIC CONCERNS, THE FESTIVAL AND CHILDRENS ACTIVITIES WERE NOT POSSIBLE DURING THE 2021 TOURNAMENT.
IN COOPERATION WITH THE GREAT LAKES OBERVING SYSTEM, SALMON UNLIMITED PURCHASED A DATA BUOY IN 2021 WITH THE HELP OF A GRANT FROM THE US DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE - NATIONAL OCEANIC AND ATMOSPHERIC ADMINISTRATION. THIS BUOY WILL BE DEPLOYED IN LAKE MICHIGAN IN THE SPRING OF 2022. THIS BUOY WITH PROVIDE IMPORTANT WEATHER AND WATER CONDITION INFORMATION THAT WILL BE IMPORTANT FOR FRESHWATER CONSERVATION EFFORTS. IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE IMPORTANT BOATER SAFETY AND SPORTFISHING CONDITION INFORMATION. ACCESS TO THE DATA WILL BE FREE TO THE PUBLIC AND AVAILABLE IN REAL-TIME.
EACH YEAR, IN COOPERATION WITH THE WISCONSIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES, SALMON UNLIMITED OBTAINS CHINOOK SALMON SMOLT AND MAINTAINS THEM IN NET PENS IN THE ROOT RIVER UNTIL THEY CAN BE RELEASED INTO THE WILD. THIS PROJECT INVOLVES MAINTAINING THE NET PEN EQUIPMENT AND FEEDING THE FISH WHILE THEY ARE BEING HELD PRIOR TO RELEASE. HOLDING THE SMOLT IN PENS PRIOR TO RELEASE GREATLY REDUCES MORTALITY BY ALLOWING THE FISH TO ADJUST TO THEIR NEW ENVIRONMENT AND BY REDUCING PREDATOR LOSS.
