THE OUTER BANKS MARATHON/HALF MARATHON IS OUR SIGNATURE EVENT. IN THE PAST THIS EVENT WEEKEND HAS BROUGHT OVER 5800 PARTICIPANTS ALONG WITH THEIR GUESTS WHICH TOTALS OVER 17,600. THIS EVENT IS RUN ON VETERANS DAY WEEKEND IN ORDER TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE EXTRA LONG WEEKEND AND COOL FALL WEATHER. EVENTS INCLUE SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE. A FUN RUN, 5K, 10K, HALF AND FULL MARATHONS, AS WELL AS A DIAPER DASH. OBSE PARTNERS WITH GO FAR - AN ORGANIZATION WHICH PROMOTES AND COORDINATES HEALTHY YOUTH RUNNING TRAINING PROGRAMS, TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FUN RUN AND 5K EVENTS. THERE IS A CARNIVAL, FAMILY FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AROUND THE SATURDAY EVENTS WITH VENDORS AND KID-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES AS WELL. THE POST RACE FESTIVAL ON SUNDAY CULMINATES IN THE TOWN OF MANTEO NC WITH TENS OF THOUSANDS GATHERING TO ENJOY THE MUSIC, FOOD, AND FUN, WHILE WATCHING RUNNERS FINISH THE HALF AND FULL MARATHONS. UNFORTUNATELY, THE SUNDAY EVENT HAD TO BE CANCELLED DUE TO SEVERE STORMS.
OUTER BANKS SPORTING EVENTS ORGANIZED THE INAUGURAL FLYING PIRATE HALF MARATHON AND FIRST FLIGHT 5K IN APRIL OF 2010 FOR THE PURPOSE OF BRINGING VISITORS TO THE OUTER BANKS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT DURING A TYPICALLY SLOW PORTION OF THE TOURIST SEASON AS WELL AS TO FOSTER NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL AMATEUR SPORTS COMPETITION. THIS RACE WAS CANCELLED THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO COVID-19.
THE RUNNING OF THE LEPRACHAUNS IS HELD IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE CELEBRATED ST PATRICKS DAY PARADE AND INCLUDES A 5K RUN AS WELL AS A 10K RUN. UNFORTUNATELY THIS EVENT HAD TO BE CANCELLED THIS YEAR DUE TO COVID 19 RESTRICTIONS.
THE OUTER BANKS TRIATHLON IS A SERIES OF 3 TRIATHLONS WHICH OFFER SOMETHING FOR ATHLETES AT BEGINNING, INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED SKILL LEVELS. THE SERIES INCLUDES A SPRINT, OLYMPIC AND HALF TRIATHLON. THERE IS ALSO THE OPPORTUNITY TO COMPETE AS RELAY TEAMS WHICH GIVES ATHLETES THE CHANCE TO PAIR WITH OTHERS IN THEIR AREAS OF EXPERTISE/STRENGTH TO COMPLETE A TRIATHLON. THE TRIATHLON ENCOURAGES HEALTHY LIVING AND FITNESS AS A RUNNER, CYCLIST AND/OR SWIMMER. THIS EVENT BROUGHT OVER 800 ATHLETES HERE DURING SEPTEMBER, WHEN TOURISM STARTS TO WANE YET THE WEATHER AND WATERS ARE STILL WARM ENOUGH TO ENJOY. EXPOSURE TO THE BEAUTIFUL OUTER BANKS ENVIRONMENT DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR WILL ENCOURAGE VISITORS TO RETURN FOR A HOLIDAY OR LONGER VACATION. THIS EVENT WAS CANCELLED THIS YEAR DUE TO RESTRICTIONS RELATED TO COVID-19. BAND IN THE SAND (FORMALLY STORM THE BEACH) IS AN ADVENTURE RACE AND OBSTACLE COURSE ON THE BEACH. THIS EVENT CELEBRATED ITS INAUGURAL DEBUT IN JUNE 2013. THIS SERIES INCLUDES 3 DIVISIONS: 5 MILER, 3 MILER, AND FAMILY FRIENDLY .75 MILER. THERE IS OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIDUAL AND TEAM COMPETITION IN ALL DIVISIONS. TEAM WORK AND SUPPORT IS HIGHLY ENCOURAGED. THIS EVENT IS HELD IN LATE SPRING ONCE THE OCEAN IS WARM ENOUGH TO BE PARTICIPANT FRIENDLY. UNFORTUNATELY THIS EVENT HAD TO BE CANCELLED DUE TO COVID-19.
