BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL WAS FOUNDED MORE THAN 30 YEARS AGO TO PROVIDE FAMILIES OF GREENWICH VILLAGE WITH AN INDEPENDENT NURSERY SCHOOL. IN 2006, GREENWICH HOUSE ASSUMED OWNERSHIP OF BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL. THROUGH QUALITY PROGRAMING AND ACTIVE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT, BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL BUILDS THE FOUNDATION FOR LIFE-LONG ENJOYMENT OF LEARNING, APPRECIATION FOR THE ARTS, AND CARE FOR THE COMMUNITY AND ENVIRONMENT. RECENT CURRICULAR AND ORGANIZATIONAL INNOVATIONS INCLUDE: NEW TODDLER PROGRAM INCLUDING DEVELOPMENTAL WORKSHOPS WITH FAMILIES, TECHNOLOGICALLY-ENHANCED COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS, PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR TEACHERS, SCHOOL-WIDE ZERO-WASTE INITIATIVE, MODELING FOR CHILDREN HABITS OF GIVING BACK TO THE WORLD AND HELPING THOSE IN NEED, INTRODUCING CHILDREN TO DIVERSE CULTURES AND ARTS, AND A LITERACY PROGRAM "WRITING WITHOUT TEARS".BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL PROVIDES EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FOR ABOUT 170 STUDENTS, AGES 19 MONTHS 5 YEARS. OUR PROGRESSIVE APPROACH IS CENTERED ON COLLABORATIVELY DESIGNED LEARNING EXPERIENCES. CHILDREN PLAY AN ACTIVE ROLE IN CO-CONSTRUCTING AN EMERGENT CURRICULUM THAT NURTURES THEIR GROWING SENSE OF IDENTITY, AGENCY AND BELONGING. TEACHERS ENGAGE IN ONGOING OBSERVATION, REFLECTION AND CRITICAL THINKING TO BRING BREADTH AND DEPTH TO LEARNING EXPERIENCES. FAMILY PARTNERSHIPS ARE ENCOURAGED THROUGH MEANINGFUL DIALOGUE, AUTHENTIC INTERACTION AND MUTUAL SUPPORT. OUR COMMUNITY DRAWS STRENGTH FROM THE DIVERSE PERSPECTIVES AND BACKGROUNDS OF OUR JOYFUL CHILDREN, DEDICATED TEACHERS AND ENGAGED FAMILIES.THE PROGRAM SERVICES OF BARROW STREET NURSERY SCHOOL ARE INTEGRATED INTO A HOLISTIC INSTITUTION OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION IN THE WEST VILLAGE NEIGHBORHOOD OF MANHATTAN.
