NEWBORN SCREENING PROGRAM HELPS TO PREVENT DEATHS FOR PNEUMOCOCCAL INFECTIONS IN CHILDREN AGES 3 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS OLD AS IT ENABLES CHILDREN TO BE IDENTIFIED TO RECEIVE PENCILLIN PROPHYLAXIS BEFORE THE DISEASE MIGHT BE DIAGNOSED FROM THE OCCURENCE OF SICKLE CELL DISEASE SYMPTOMS. PROGRAM RECENTLY EXPANDED TO INCLUDE SOME FORMS OF THALASSEMIA.
