THE SCRI (SAFE CLIMATE RESEARCH INITIATIVE) PROVIDES RESEARCH FUNDING FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH PROGRAMS AT CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE IN CLIMATE AND ATMOSPHERIC RESEARCH AND RELATED AREAS OF TECHNOLOGY. THE PROGRAM INCLUDES COORDINATION ACROSS SCRI AND OUTSIDE RESEARCH EFFORTS, CONVENING, PUBLICATIONS SUPPORT AND THE DEVELOPMENT AND MAINTENANCE OF A RESEARCH ROADMAP.
NCAR: CLIMATE INTERVENTION IS A PROPOSED DELIBERATE STRATEGY THAT COULD POTENTIALLY REDUCE THE ADVERSE EFFECTS ON WEATHER AND CLIMATE ASSOCIATED WITH CLIMATE CHANGE. INJECTIONS OF AEROSOLS INTO THE STRATOSPHERE HAVE BEEN SHOWN TO BE THE MOST PROMISING METHOD OF CLIMATE INTERVENTION IN TERMS OF RESTORING CLIMATE TO PRESENT DAY CONDITIONS AND REDUCING SIDE EFFECTS OF A CLIMATE INTERVENTION. CHANGES IN EXTREME WEATHER, SUCH AS FLOODS, HEATWAVES, DROUGHTS AND STORMS ARE A PROMINENT SIGNATURE OF CLIMATE CHANGE, HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN LITTLE RESEARCH DONE ON HOW EXTREME EVENTS WILL CHANGE WITH CLIMATE INTERVENTION USING STRATOSPHERIC AEROSOLS AND HOW ROBUST THESE CHANGES WOULD BE UNDER DIFFERENT STRATOSPHERIC AEROSOL INJECTION STRATEGIES. THIS MODELING PROJECT WILL EXAMINE IN DETAIL CHANGES IN EXTREME WEATHER WITH CLIMATE INTERVENTION USING STRATOSPHERIC AEROSOLS AND EXPLORE SENSITIVITY OF THOSE CHANGES TO VARIOUS INJECTION SCENARIOS AND PERTURBATIONS TO MODEL PHYSICS. THE PROJECT WILL UTILIZE EXISTING SIMULATIONS THAT WERE CARRIED OUT AS PART OF THE STRATOSPHERIC AEROSOL GEOENGINEERING LARGE ENSEMBLE PROJECT (GLENS) AND ADDITIONAL SIMULATIONS THAT WILL BE CARRIED OUT WITH THE COMMUNITY EARTH SYSTEM MODEL, VERSION 2 WITH THE WHOLE ATMOSPHERE COMMUNITY CLIMATE MODEL AS ITS ATMOSPHERIC COMPONENT (CESM2-WACCM) AS PART OF THIS PROJECT. THE SIMULATIONS WILL BE SHARED WITH THE BROADER CLIMATE INTERVENTION RESEARCH COMMUNITY FOR FURTHER ANALYSIS.
COMMUNICATIONS: SILVERLINING'S COMMUNICATION EFFORTS INCLUDE CONTENT DEVELOPMENT, MEDIA ENGAGEMENT, WEB AND SOCIAL MEDIA, VIRTUAL AND LIVE EVENTS AND PROGRAMS AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS FOR DIFFERENT STAKEHOLDERS.
