PARACHUTE SHORT COURSE: THE HG HEINRICH VIRTUAL SHORT COURSE PRESENTS A SYSTEMS APPROACH TO THE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING OF PARACHUTE SYSTEMS. THE COURSE FOCUSES ON THE NEEDS OF ENGINEERS FROM GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY WHO MONITOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF RECOVERY SYSTEMS AND OF ENGINEERS WHO DESIGN DECELERATOR SYSTEMS AND OVERSEE THEIR FABRICATION. CASE STUDIES OF DESIGN OF AERODYNAMIC DECELERATORS AND RELATED COMPONENTS ARE PRESENTED. HANDS-ON EXERCISES ON PARACHUTE SYSTEMS DESIGN ARE ASSIGNED AND DISCUSSED. THE TWO COURSES PRESENTED ARE:"INTRODUCTION TO AERONAUTICS - A PRACTICAL PERSPECTIVE" THIS 32 HOUR COURSE PROVIDES THE STUDENT WITH A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF THE BASICS OF AERONAUTICS AND THE GIVE-AND-TAKE INHERENT TO AIRCRAFT DESIGN. A BUILDING BLOCK APPROACH IS USED TO PRESENT ALL THE KEY ASPECTS OF AERONAUTICS: LOW/HIGH SPEED AERODYNAMICS, STABILITY AND CONTROL, STRUCTURES, PROPULSION, AND PERFORMANCE."INTRODUCTION TO MANNED AND UNMANNED OPERATIONS IN THE NATIONAL AIRSPACE" THIS 20 HOUR COURSE IS FOR THOSE WHO DESIGN, DEVELOP, MANAGE, AND EMPLOY AIR VEHICLES (MANNED AND UNMANNED) WHO ARE UNFAMILIAR WITH THE US AVIATION REGULATORY AND OPERATING ENVIRONMENTS. THE COURSE UTILIZES THE SAME BUILDING BLOCK APPROACH AS OUR OTHER "INTRO TO.." COURSES AND INCLUDES A GROUP CASE STUDY TO REINFORCE THE COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES.


MARTIN L. DREWS MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP:THE MARTIN L. DREWS SCHOLARSHIP IS A $500 SUPPLEMENTAL SCHOLARSHIP FOR AN NIA GRADUATE STUDENT WHO IS ENGAGED IN RESEARCH RELATED TO THE EXPLORATION OF SPACE. THIS SCHOLARSHIP WAS ESTABLISHED IN MEMORY OF MARTIN L. DREWS. THE SCHOLARSHIP RECOGNIZES HIS KEEN INTEREST IN SPACE EXPLORATION AND IS FUNDED BY THE DREWS FAMILY. THE SCHOLARSHIP IS AWARDED IN MAY OF EACH YEAR. THE FUNDS MAY BE USED FOR EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES CONSISTING OF PURCHASING BOOKS, CONFERENCE TRAVEL AND RESEARCH EQUIPMENT INCLUDING COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE.
