Describe the Organization's Program Activity:

Part 3 - Line 4a

MILD TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURY DIAGNOSTIC (MTBI) - THIS PROJECT IS ATTEMPTING TO DEVELOP A SIMPLE DEVICE TO ASSIST IN MAKING A MORE OBJECTIVE DIAGNOSIS OF MTBI. THE DEVICE WOULD ASSIST MEDICAL PRACTITIONERS IN DETERMINING WHEN PARTICIPANTS SHOULD BE SIDELINED AND WHEN THEY SHOULD RETURN TO PLAY. THE GOAL IS TO PREVENT ATHLETES FROM SUFFERING SUCCESSIVE HEAD IMPACTS WHEN THE BRAIN IS ALREADY INJURED AND NOT COMPLETELY HEALED, RESULTING IN MORE SEVERE BRAIN TRAUMA. THIS RESEARCH IS BEING CONDUCTED WITH THE COOPERATION OF THE TAHOE TRUCKEE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE TAHOE FOREST HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM, INCLINE VILLAGE COMMUNITY HOSPITAL EMERGENCY ROOM, AND THE EMERGENCY CLINICS AT THE LOCAL SKI RESORTS AND THE UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA RENO. IN APRIL 2019, THE INSTITUTE HAD AN ARTICLE PUBLISHED IN THE PEER REVIEWED "SPORTS MEDICINE OPEN" JOURNAL TITLED "OBJECTIVE CLASSIFICATION OF MTBI USING MACHINE LEARNING ON A COMBINATION OF FRONTPOLAR ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPHY MEASUREMENTS AND SELF-REPORTED SYMPTOMS." THE INSTITUTE IS WORKING TO REFINE THE ACCURACY OF THE SYSTEM AND ALSO PROVE THAT IT CAN BE USEFUL IN THE RETURN TO PLAY DECISION.
