TO ENRICH AND CREATE COMMUNITY THROUGH LIVE THEATRE. THIS IS ACCOMPLISHED THROUGH THE FOLLOWING THREE PILLARS: EXCELLENCE, EDUCATION, AND EQUITY.
Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
CIVIC PROGRAMMING IN 2021 CONTINUED TO BE ADVERSELY AFFECTED BY THE COVID- 19 PANDEMIC. TO BRING THEATRICAL CONTENT SAFELY AND RESPONSIBLY TO OUR COMMUNITY, WE SPLIT OUR YEAR INTO THREE SEGMENTS: THE FIRST (JANUARY-APRIL) WAS DEDICATED TO STREAMING CONTENT, THE SECOND (MAY-AUGUST) WAS FOCUSED ON OUTDOOR PRODUCTIONS, THE THIRD (SEPTEMBER-DECEMBER) BROUGHT PROGRAMMING BACK INDOORS WITH MASKING AND VACCINATION REQUIREMENTS AS RECOMMENDED BY THE CDC. EVEN CONSIDERING THESE PIVOTS AND RESTRICTIONS, THE CIVIC PRODUCED MORE PRODUCTIONS IN 2021 THAN IN ANY PAST SEASON: EIGHT STREAMING PRODUCTIONS, FIVE OUTDOOR PRODUCTIONS (INCLUDING THE FIRST-EVER SOUTH BEND FRINGE FESTIVAL), AND FIVE INDOOR PRODUCTIONS. CREATING THIS VOLUME OF CREATIVE CONTENT DURING A GLOBAL PANDEMIC WAS A HERCULEAN ENDEAVOR; OUR PATRONS, VOLUNTEERS, AND THE LARGER SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY WERE APPRECIATIVE OF THE CIVIC'S EFFORTS. BECAUSE WE MAINTAINED AND EXPANDED OUR PRESENCE DURING THIS CHALLENGING TIME, WE FEEL LIKE THE CIVIC HAS BECOME EVEN MORE RELEVANT AND RESPECTED. THIS REPUTATIONAL BOOST WILL ONLY HELP THE ORGANIZATION AS WE CONTINUE TO EMERGE FROM THE PANDEMIC. IN ADDITION TO OUR REGULAR PROGRAMMING, THE CIVIC ALSO PARTNERED WITH IVY TECH ON TWO CULTURAL PROGRAMS, "B FRANK AND HEAL" ON A COMMUNITY GOSPEL SHOW, NOTRE DAME'S NANOVIC INSTITUTE ON A FLAMENCO PERFORMANCE, AND THE SOUTH BEND COMMUNITY SCHOOL CORPORATION ON LESSON PLANS RELATED TO OUR ONGOING AUGUST WILSON PROJECT. THROUGH A PARTNERSHIP WITH AD LUCEM GROUP, THE CIVIC PLANNED AND EXECUTED A LARGE-SCALE STRATEGIC PLANNING PROJECT INCLUDING MULTIPLE FOCUS GROUPS AND A FULL-DAY COMMUNITY SUMMIT. EDUCATION PROGRAMMING RESUMED IN THE SUMMER OF 2021. CAMP REGISTRATION WAS 30% ABOVE PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS EVEN WITH ADDITIONAL SAFETY REQUIREMENTS. EARNED INCOME HAS NOT RETURNED TO PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS, BUT GRANTS, SPONSORSHIPS, AND INDIVIDUAL DONATIONS WERE ABLE TO KEEP THE ORGANIZATION IN THE BLACK FOR ANOTHER DIFFICULT YEAR.
