THE MISSION OF TOLEDO OPERA IS TO CREATE OPERA EXPERIENCES IN THE THEATER, IN THE CLASSROOM, AND THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY THAT CELEBRATE COMPELLING STORIES, EXPRESSED THROUGH GOLORIOUS MUSIC AND POWERFUL VOICES TO ENGAGE, CONNECT, AND INSPIRE. TOLEDO OPERA'S VISION IS TO BE AN AMBITIOUS CULTURAL LEADER IN THE REGION BY PAIRING STORYTELLING AND ARTISTRY OF THE HIGHEST CALIBER WITH AUTHENTIC COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS.

IN 2022-2023 TOLEDO OPERA PRODUCED THREE OPERAS AND ONE GRAND OPERA CHORUS CONCERT AS OUR SEASON OFFERINGS WANTING TO COME OUT OF THE PANDEMIC WITH THE STRONGEST PROGRAMING POSSIBLE. WE OPENED THE SEASON IN AUGUST 2022 WITH A NEW OPERA BLUE BY JENINE TESSORI AND TAZWELL THOMPSON. THIS OPERA, ABOUT A BROOKLYN POLICE FAMILY WHO EXPERIENCE THE DEATH OF THEIR TEENAGE SON WAS PARTICULARLY TIMELY AND ALLOWED US TO HOLD PUBLIC FORUMS AROUND URBAN POLICING TODAY. BLUE HAD ORIGINALLY BEEN SCHEDULED FOR FEBRUARY 2022 BUT WAS POSTPONED DUE TO COVID. THEN IN OCTOBER, WE PRODUCED A DOUBLE BILL, TWO ONE ACT OPERAS PERFORMED IN ONE NIGHT; SUOR ANGELICA AND CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA FOR OUR AUDIENCES. IN FEBRUARY 2023 WE THEN PRODUCED A ROLOCKING COMEDY, THE MERRY WIDOW BY FRANZ LEHAR WHICH ENDED WITH FIREWORKS! THE SEASON CONCLUDED IN APRIL WITH CELEBRZIONE DEL CORO, OPERA'S GREATEST CHORUSES AND ARIAS IN CONCERT ON THE VALENTINE STAGE.


TOLEDO OPERA SAW INCREASES IN THE NUMBER OF SCHOOLS TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OUR TOURING PROGRAM, OPERA ON WHEELS. WE PERFORMED A REDUCED VERSION OF PIRATES OF PENZANCE IN 60 SCHOOLS IN OUR REGION WHICH WAS AN INCREASE OF 50% FROM THE PREVIOUS COVID SCHOOL YEAR.
