CLTA HAS BEEN AN ORGANIZATION FOR MORE THAN 50 YEARS DEDICATED TO SUPPORTING TEACHING AND LEARNING, AND TO EXTENDING OUR SERVICES AND RESOURCES FOR THE BENEFIT OF TEACHERS AND LEARNERS OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.

1) ANNUAL CONFERENCE CLTA PLANS AND IMPLEMENTS AN ANNUAL 4 DAY CONFERENCE IN VARIOUS PARTS OF THE STATE. LANGUAGE EDUCATORS FROM CALIFORNIA AND BEYOND ARE ABLE TO GET HIGH QUALITY, STANDARDS-ALIGNED PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT THROUGH PRESENTATIONS MADE BY THEIR PEERS AND OTHER EXPERTS IN THE FIELD OF WL EDUCATION. THEY ARE ALSO ABLE TO NETWORK AND SHARE BEST PRACTICES THROUGH SOCIAL EVENTS AT THE CONFERENCE. PARTICIPANTS CAN EARN OPTIONAL CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS THROUGH STANFORD CONTINUING STUDIES.
4) SUMMER SEMINAR CLTA PARTNERS WITH THE CALIFORNIA WORLD LANGUAGE PROJECT TO OFFER A RESIDENTIAL SUMMER SEMINAR AT UCSB FOR LANGUAGE EDUCATORS. WE CHOOSE A TIMELY THEME FOR OUR MEMBERS AND BRING IN THE BEST MINDS IN THE STATE AND COUNTRY TO BE GUEST SPEAKERS AND STRAND FACILITATORS RELATED TO THE SEMINAR THEME. ONE OF THE STRANDS OFFERED IS A STUDENT STRAND, INTENDED TO ATTRACT TALENTED UNDERGRADUATES TO THE FIELD OF WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION. 5) SUMMER STUDY AND TRAVEL ABROAD FOR MEMBERS CLTA SOLICITS DONATIONS TO SUPPORT OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR MEMBERS TO TRAVEL ABROAD WITH THE INTENTION OF IMPROVING THEIR LANGUAGE AND TARGET CULTURE PROFICIENCY. WE OFFER SCHOLARSHIPS TO DEFRAY TRAVEL COSTS, AND PARTNER WITH ORGANIZATIONS TO OFFER FREE TUITION TO EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE PEDAGOGICAL PRACTICES. 6) LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CLTA OFFERS A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (CALLI) AS PART OF ITS ANNUAL CONFERENCE. IDENTIFIED TEACHERS ARE SUPPORTED TO ATTEND THE REGULAR CONFERENCE AND PARTICIPATE IN A 2-DAY WORKSHOP DESIGNED TO GROW THEIR LEADERSHIP CAPACITY FOR THEIR SITES, DISTRICTS, COUNTIES, AND FOR OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TO WHICH THEY MAY BELONG, SUCH AS CLTA. WE ALSO SEND ONE CANDIDATE PER CYCLE TO A SIMILAR 2-YEAR NATIONAL LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (LILL). SEVERAL CURRENT BOARD MEMBERS HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS A RESULT OF THEIR PARTICIPATION IN THESE ACTIVITIES. 7) CLTA VOICES CLTA PUBLISHES A FREE BI-MONTHLY NEWSBRIEF THAT ADVERTISES OUR PROGRAMS AS WELL AS ACTIVITIES FROM OTHER ORGANIZATIONS RELATED TO WORLD LANGUAGES AND CULTURES.
2) WEDNESDAY WEBINARS CLTA HOSTS 3 WEBINAR SERIES THROUGHOUT THE SCHOOL YEAR ON WEDNESDAYS: WEEK 1 SERIES IS CALLED PRACT-IN AND ALLOWS LANGUAGE LEARNERS TO PRACTICE THE LANGUAGE THEY ARE LEARNING AT AN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OF ABOVE, FACILITATED BY A NATIVE SPEAKER; WEEK 2 SERIES HAS VARIOUS PRESENTERS CHOSEN FROM AMONG THE MOST OUTSTANDING PROFESSIONALS IN THE SWCOLT REGION. TOPICS VARY AND RANGE FROM CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY TIPS TO PROMOTING EQUITABLE CLASSROOMS; WEEK 4 SERIES IS A BOOK STUDY. IN 2022-23 WE READ UNCOMMON GROUND, BY F. HENSHAW AND M HAWKINS. PARTICIPANTS CAN EARN OPTIONAL CONTINUING EDUCATION UNITS THROUGH STANFORD CONTINUING STUDIES.
3) ADVOCACY AND EDUCATION CLTA DEVOTES TIME AND ENERGY TO EDUCATING AND ADVOCATING FOR THE CAUSE OF WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION IN CALIFORNIA AND NATIONALLY. WE ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE ON COMMITTEES FACILITATED BY THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION IN ORDER TO INFORM STATE FRAMEWORKS AND STANDARDS FOR WORLD LANGUAGE EDUCATION.
