OUR MISSION IS TO DEVELOP ENGAGED READERS AND WRITERS IN UNDERSERVED NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS BY DESIGNING AND DELIVERING PROGRAMS THAT ARE MULTI-DISCIPLINARY, CULTURALLY RESPONSIVE, AND PROMOTE DEEPER CONNECTIONS TO BOOKS AND THEIR AUTHORS.

BEHIND THE BOOK IS A LITERACY NONPROFIT SERVING PREK-12TH GRADE STUDENTS IN TITLE 1 NYC PUBLIC SCHOOLS. BTB PARTNERS WITH TEACHERS TO CREATE IMMERSIVE CURRICULUM UNITS BASED ON A BOOK THAT INCLUDE WORKING WITH THE AUTHOR, WRITING, ART, AND EXPLORING THE CONTENT OF THE BOOK THROUGH DRAMA, AND RELEVANT FIELD TRIPS.IN 2023 BTB SERVED 1,677 STUDENTS IN 16 SCHOOLS THROUGH 80 PROGRAMS CONSISTING OF 512 WORKSHOPS IN MANHATTAN, QUEENS AND THE BRONX. 45% OF OUR PROGRAMS SERVED STUDENTS IN SPECIAL ED CLASSROOMS AND 20 PROGRAMS TOOK PLACE WITH ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS. PROGRAMS WERE CONDUCTED IN PERSON. THE MAJORITY OF OUR SCHOOL PARTNERS HAVE COMMITTED TO PARTNERING WITH US FOR THE 2023-2024 SCHOOL YEAR AND WE HAVE ADDED ADDITIONAL SCHOOLS FOR FY24. BTB DONATED 14,000 BOOKS TO STUDENTS AND LOCAL COMMUNITIES.
