A VOLUNTEER BASED ORGANIZATION, WES'S MISSION IS TO PROMOTE THE EDUCATION AND WELFARE OF WORKING AND UNEMPLOYED FAMILIES IN ILLINOIS AND TO CONDUCT EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL ACTIVITIES, WHICH ADVANCE THE WELL-BEING OF INDIVIDUALS AND FAMILIES IN THE COMMUNITY.

THE WORKERS EDUCATION SOCIETY (WES)PROVIDED A SITE AND INTAKE WORKERS FOR LOW INCOME ILLINOIS RESIDENTS TO APPLY FOR STATE AND FEDERAL-FUNDED ASSISTANCE WITH UTILITY BILLS AND WEATHERIZATION. FUNDING WAS PROVIDED BY THE LOW INCOME ENERGY ASSISTANCE PROGRAM (LIHEAP).THE SITE WAS UTILIZED AS A MEETING VENUE FOR AGENCIES PARTICIPATING WITH THE COMMUNITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION (CEDA) AND FOR TRAINING OF NEW INTAKE WORKERS. COMMUNITY MEMBERS DONATED HUNDREDS OF HOURS TO DO COMMUNITY OUTREACH AND TO ADMINISTER THE PROGRAM. WES PROCESSED 1043 APPLICATIONS FOR LIHEAP/CEDA PROGRAM FOR 2016.


WES'S UNITY CENTER COMMUNITY RESOURCE PROGRAM HELPED NEIGHBORHOOD RESIDENTS WITH CULTURAL AND EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS CONCRETE RESOURCES. CULTURAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDED ITS ANNUAL AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH DINNER A MAY DAY, WHITE SOX GAMES, AND FILM SHOWINGS. WES MADE ITS SPACE AVAILABLE FOR PRACTICE SESSIONS FOR THE LOCAL CHINESE CHORUS AS WELL AS "YES! THIS IS YOUR DAY! AN INSPIRATIONAL GROUP THAT MEETS MONTHLY. THE CENTERS EXTENSIVE LIBRARY OF WORKING CLASS HISTORY TEXTS WAS AVAI


WES HOSTED EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS AND A WEEK LONG SUMMER SCHOOL FOR YOUNG ACTIVITIES IN COOPERATION WITH THE PEOPLE BEFORE PROFITS EDUCATIONAL FUND. WES VOLUNTEERS PROVIDED THE LABOR TO DO A WEEKLY MAILING TO SENIORS AND INCARCERATED PEOPLE TO PROVIDE THEM NEWS THAT THEY WOULD OTHERWISE NOT BE ABLE TO ACCESS. WES HOSTS WEEKLY SESSIONS WITH A BENEFITS ENROLLMENT COUNSELOR WHO PROVIDES ASSISTANCE AT NO COST TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS ENROLLING IN MEDICAID, MEDICARE AND THE AFFORDABLE CARE ACT COVERAGE.
