TO ENHANCE THE ENJOYMENT AND USE OF THE WOODLAWN CEMETERY BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC.

WOODLAWN'S BRIDGE TO CRAFT CAREERS PROGRAM SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED A SPRING MASONRY PRESERVATION COHORT AND A FALL LANDSCAPE RESTORATION PROGRAM. THE SPRING MASONRY COHORT BEGAN IN FEBRUARY 2021 AND THE INTERNS LEARNED HOW TO CLEAN AND POINT MAUSOLEUMS, AND BUILD SCAFFOLDING. THE YOUNG PEOPLE RECEIVED TRAINING IN JAHN MORTAR AND MAN-LIFT OPERATIONS AND RECEIVED THEIR OSHA-30 AND 10-HOUR SITE SAFETY CERTIFICATIONS. THIRTEEN YOUNG PEOPLE COMPLETED THE PROGRAM AND AT THE END OF THE PROGRAM, TWO INTERNS WERE SELECTED FOR AN ENHANCED MASONRY APPRENTICESHIP AT WOODLAWN. (SEE MORE ON SCHEDULE O)THE LANDSCAPE RESTORATION PROGRAM BEGAN IN THE FALL OF 2021 AND 28 YOUNG PEOPLE COMPLETED THE INTERNSHIP. THE INTERNS PARTICIPATED IN A ZOOM LECTURE EACH MORNING ADDRESSING TOPICS SUCH AS TURF MANAGEMENT, TREE IDENTIFICATION, PEST MANAGEMENT, AND PLANT HEALTHCARE. THE 10-WEEK INTERNSHIP ALSO INCLUDED LEARNING HOW TO USE HAND CLIPPERS AND TREE PRUNERS, PLANTING BULBS AND TREES, AND MULCHING TREES AND FLOWER BEDS. THE INTERNS RECEIVED OSHA-30 CERTIFICATION, 10-HOUR SITE SAFETY AND FLAGGING CERTIFICATION.BOTH THE MASONRY PRESERVATION PROGRAM AND THE LANDSCAPE RESTORATION PROGRAM SUPPORT THE MISSION OF ENHANCING WOODLAWN AS A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK.IN THE SUMMER OF 2021, WOODLAWN CONSERVANCY HOSTED THE SUMMER YOUTH EMPLOYMENT PROGRAM HISTORIC PRESERVATION SUMMER SCHOOL. THIS 6-WEEK PROGRAM ENABLED 20 STUDENTS FROM BRONX INTERNATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL AND BRONX LAB SCHOOL TO LEARN ABOUT HISTORIC PRESERVATION AND LANDSCAPE RESTORATION. THE STUDENTS ALSO PARTICIPATED IN SITE-VISITS TO HISTORIC SITES RELATED TO WOODLAWN CONSERVANCY, INCLUDING CENTRAL PARK, WHERE THE STUDENTS MET WITH THE BRONZE CONSERVATION SPECIALIST AND INTERNS. WOODLAWN CONSERVANCY BELIEVES THIS TYPE OF SUMMER PROGRAM ASSISTS WITH RECRUITING FOR OUR BRIDGE TO CRAFTS CAREER INITIATIVE.


THE WOODLAWN CONSERVANCY PRESENTS AN ON-GOING CALENDAR OF TOURS, CONCERTS, LECTURES, AND SPECIAL EVENTS. THE CONSERVANCY ALSO HOSTS BRONX-BASED PERFORMING ARTS GROUPS WHO NEED PERFORMANCE SPACE. PUBLIC TOURS INCLUDE WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH, JAZZ HERITAGE MONTH, BLACK HISTORY MONTH, WORLD WAR I VETERANS DAY TOUR, ITALIAN HERITAGE MONTH, ILLUMINATED MAUSOLEUMS AND ILLUMINATED ANGELS. THE CONSERVANCY PARTICIPATES IN NYC CITY-WIDE INITIATIVES INCLUDING OPEN HOUSE NY, JANE'S WALK, AND THE NYS PATH THROUGH HISTORY WEEKEND. PROGRAM PARTNERS INCLUDE THE BRONX HISTORICAL SOCIETY, THE NYC AUDUBON SOCIETY, THE BRONX ARTS ENSEMBLE, AND JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER.(SEE MORE ON SCHEDULE O)A SIGNATURE PROGRAM OF THE WOODLAWN CONSERVANCY IS THE PLACEMENT OF FLAGS ON VETERANS GRAVES EACH YEAR AT MEMORIAL DAY. THIS COMMUNITY-BASED EFFORT ENABLES THE CONSERVANCY TO RECOGNIZE OVER 8500 VETERANS THAT ARE BURIED AT WOODLAWN. THE CONSERVANCY WELCOMES APPROXIMATELY 100 VOLUNTEERS TO ASSIST IN THIS EFFORT. IN 2021, THE CONSERVANCY HOSTED 67 PROGRAMS.
