EXPAND THE CHARITABLE SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL FUNCTION OF CATIE (CENTER FOR TROPICAL AGRICULTRUAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH), A NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION HEADQUARTERED IN COSTA RICA WITH OFFICES IN MUCH OF LATIN AMERICA. THIS WILL BE ACHIEVED BY THE FOLLOWING THREE ACTIVITIES: (1) SPONSORING SCIENTIFIC AND EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS; (2) FUNDING RESEARCH, STUDY AND PUBILCATION IN SCIENTIFIC AREAS RELEVENT TO THE FOUNDATION'S MISSION, AND; (3) WORKING WITH NON-PROFIT ENVIROMENTAL AND ECOLOGICAL ORGANIZATIONS WITHIN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD. ALL THREE ACTIVIIES WILL SERVE THE FUNCTION OF EDUCATING AND INFORMING ORGANIZATIONS ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF PRESERVING THE AMERICAN TROPICS.

A GRANT FROM ASHA PROVIDED FUNDS TO UPGRADE THE CATIE CAMPUS INTERNET CAPABILITIES, ADD SERVERS AND COMPUTERS TO ALLOW CATIE TO PERFORM ONLINE AND BLENDED EDUCATION. IN EFFECT, THIS PROJECT BROUGHT THE CATIE DIGITAL CAPABILITIES UP TO THE STANDARD OF MOST US INSTITUTIONS OF HIGHER LEARNING. THE ENTIRE AMOUNT OF THE GRANT FROM ASHA WAS MADE TO CATIE.
EACH YEAR WE CONDUCT A MAJOR DONOR FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN WHICH GOES TO THE GENERAL BUDGET OF CATIE. CONTRIBTONS FROM THE WALLACE GENETICS FOUNDATION ($25,000), SOUTWEST AIRLINES ($19,100), AND RICHARD SILVISTRINI ($5,000), WE PROVIDE TO CATIE TO DEFRAY GENERAL EXPENSES.
IN RECOGNITION OF THE DEVASTATING FLOODS IN THE TURRIALBA REGION OF COSTA RICA, WE ESTABLISHED A GOFUNDME AND FACEBOOK ACCOUNTS TO RAISE FUNDS TO ASSIST THOSE IMPACTED. ALL OF THOSE FINDS WERE SENT TO A SPECIAL BRANCH OF CATIE THAT ADMINISTERED THE ASSISTANCE TO THE PUBLIC.
