THE EITELJORG MUSEUM COLLECTS AND PRESERVES WESTERN ART AND NATIVE AMERICAN ART AND CULTURAL OBJECTS OF THE HIGHEST QUALITY, AND SERVES THE PUBLIC THROUGH ENGAGING EXHIBITIONS, EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, CULTURAL EXCHANGES, AND ENTERTAINING SPECIAL EVENTS.

EXHIBITIONSIN 2022 THE MUSEUM COMPLETED A RENOVATION OF THE 11,000 SQ. FT. NATIVE AMERICAN GALLERIES. EXPRESSION OF LIFE: NATIVE ART IN NORTH AMERICA, IS A STRONG DEPARTURE FROM THE WAYS NATIVE ART HAS TYPICALLY BEEN PRESENTED AT MUSEUMS. THE EITELJORG'S NEW GALLERIES ARE A SPACE FOR NATIVE PEOPLES THEMSELVES TO BE THE AUTHORITY OF THEIR OWN STORIES. AS VISITORS ENTER THE GALLERIES, THEY WILL READ A LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT AND LISTEN TO AUDIO GREETINGS IN THE LANGUAGES OF THE ORIGINAL INHABITANTS OF INDIANA: THE MIAMI, POTAWATOMI, DELAWARE, SHAWNEE, PEORIA AND KICKAPOO. A SPACE WITHIN THE NEW GALLERIES FOCUSES ON THE NATIVE PEOPLES OF THE GREAT LAKES AND SURROUNDING AREAS.WARHOL'S WEST WAS ORGANIZED THE BOOTH WESTERN ART MUSEUM IN CARTERSVILLE, GEORGIA. THE EXHIBIT EXPLORED ANDY WARHOL'S LOVE OF THE WEST REPRESENTED IN HIS ART, MOVIES, ATTIRE, TRAVEL, AND COLLECTING. SNOW DAY SHOWCASED THE BEAUTIFUL WORKS FROM THE EITELJORG MUSEUM'S PERMANENT COLLECTION AROUND THE CENTRAL THEME OF WINTER AND FOCUSED ON THE AESTHETIC QUALITIES, WHILE ALSO PROVIDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR GUESTS TO REFLECT ON WHAT WINTER MEANS TO THEM, INCLUDING SEASONAL ACTIVITIES, TRADITIONS, AND STORIES. THE MUSEUM CELEBRATED IT'S 30TH YEAR OF INDIAN MARKET & FESTIVAL AND FEATURED AN EXHIBITION, INDIAN MARKET & FESTIVAL 30TH ANNIVERSARY TO SHOWCASE THE PURCHASE PRIZES FROM THE PREVIOUS 30 YEARS OF MARKETS. IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ANNUAL QUEST FOR THE WEST ART SHOW AND SALE, THE EITELJORG MUSEUM PRESENTED A SPECIAL EXHIBITION OF WORKS BY LONGTIME QUEST ARTIST, AND 2021 ARTIST OF DISTINCTION WINNER, DENIS MILHOMME, NATURAL WONDERS: THE ART OF DENIS MILHOMME. HOOSIER HOLIDAY FAVORITE, JINGLE RAILS: THE GREAT WESTERN ADVENTURE EXPERIENCE CLOSED OUT THE YEAR. NATIVE AMERICAN ART AND CONTENT CONTINUED TO BE AVAILABLE TO VISITORS IN SPECIAL EXHIBITS INCLUDING NATIVE AMERICAN CUSTOMARY ART 101 WHICH FEATURED NATIVE BEADWORK, POTTERY, BASKETRY, JEWELRY AND OTHER WORKS AND CONTEMPORARY NATIVE ART 101 WHICH ILLUSTRATED THE CONTINUATION OF NATIVE ART INTO PRESENT DAY.
PUBLIC PROGRAMSMUSEUM PROGRAMS RETURNED WITH VIGOR IN 2022, WITH ATTENDANCE TOPPING THE PRE-PANDEMIC LEVELS OF 2019. HIGHLIGHTS IN 2022 INCLUDED A LONG AWAITED VISIT AND SOLD OUT POETRY READING BY POET LAUREATE OF THE UNITED STATES, JOY HARJO (MVSKOKE/CREEK NATION). AFTER AN EXTENDED CLOSURE, THE NEWLY REIMAGINED NATIVE AMERICAN GALLERIES OPENED TO GREAT ACCLAIM, ACCOMPANIED BY AN EXTENDED SUMMER OF PROGRAMMING FEATURING INDIGENOUS ARTISTS, MUSICIANS, AND EXPERIENCES. EVENING CONCERTS UNDER THE SAILS WITH HIP-HOP DUO SNOTTY NOSE REZ KIDS, MULTI-AWARD WINNING MUSICIANS JENEDA AND CLAYSON BENALLY (DIN) BETTER KNOWN AS SIHASIN, AND BRUL INTRODUCED NEW AUDIENCES TO NATIVE AMERICAN AND FIRST NATIONS MUSICIANS. THE POPULAR ANNUAL DA DE MUERTOS COMMUNITY CELEBRATION SAW RECORD ATTENDANCE WITH OVER 5000 ENJOYING EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS, LIVELY PERFORMANCES, DELICIOUS FOOD, AND A MERCADO. LECTURES ON TOPICS FROM BLACK COWBOYS TO THE ART OF ANDY WARHOL, CULTURAL PERFORMANCES AND STORYTELLING BY GREAT LAKES-BASED BIZHIKI CULTURE AND DANCE COMPANY, BOOK CLUB MEETINGS, ARTIST AND CURATOR TALKS, WORKSHOPS, SENSORY FRIENDLY EXPERIENCES, ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE, AND POPULAR FAMILY PROGRAMS LIKE JUNETEENTH AND JINGLE RAILS: THE GREAT WESTERN ADVENTURE ROUNDED OUT A ROBUST YEAR OF PROGRAMMING.

ON JUNE 25 & 26, MORE THAN 120 NATIVE AMERICAN AND FIRST NATIONS ARTISTS RETURNED TO THE MUSEUM FOR THE FIRST IN-PERSON INDIAN MARKET AND FESTIVAL SINCE 2019. MUSICAL PERFORMANCES BY REGGAE/ROCK BANDS ED KABOTIE (HOPI/TEWA) AND THA'YOTIES AND INNASTATE, AND MULTI-AWARD WINNING ARTIST AND EDUCATOR WADE FERNANDEZ (MENOMINEE NATION) ENTERTAINED MARKET AND FESTIVALGOERS.
