ALSO, THE ORGANIZATION'S PURPOSE IS TO DEVELOP PUBLIC POLICY PROPOSALS DESIGNED TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF LIFE FOR THE VIETNAM-ERA VETERANS AND OTHERS, ESPECIALLY IN THE AREAS OF EMPLOYMENT, EDUCATION, TRAINING AND HEALTH.

SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE PROGRAM: THE SERVICE REPRESENTATIVE PREPARES AND REGISTERS CLAIMS ON BEHALF OF VETERANS AND/OR THEIR FAMILIES WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS. IT REPRESENTS CLAIMANTS IN HEARINGS BEFORE THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS AND MAKES REFERRALS TO COMMUNITY BASED ORGANIZATIONS AND VETERANS' AGENCIES THAT CAN PROVIDE NECESSARY SUPPORT SERVICES TO THE VETERANS AND/OR THEIR FAMILIES WHILE CLAIMS ARE PENDING.
VETERANS' COURT: VIETNAM VETERANS OF AMERICA - BUCKEYE STATE COUNCIL, INC. HAS 5 CHAPTERS WITHIN THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION WITH 168 MEMBERS. AT THE ORGANIZATION'S REQUEST, THE OHIO DEPARTMENT OF CORRECTIONS AND REHABILITATION IDENTIFIES VETERANS WITHIN ITS SYSTEM. THE ORGANIZATION INSURES THAT THE BENEFITS EACH VETERAN IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM EARNED WHILE IN UNIFORM ARE NOT LOST. THE ORGANIZATION IS WORKING WITH FORMER OHIO SUPREME COURT JUSTICE EVE STRATTON TO EXPAND THE VETERAN'S COURT PROGRAM IN OHIO. THE VETERANS' COURT PROVIDES INCARCERATION ALTERNATIVES TO THOSE VETERANS IN THE JUSTICE SYSTEM WHO ARE CHARGED WITH NON-VIOLENT CRIMES. JUDGE STRATTON AND THE ORGANIZATION MEET AND CONFER WITH INDIVIDUAL COUNTY CRIMINL COURT ADMINISTRATIONS TO DEFINE THE OFFENSES THAT WILL BE PROCESSED THROUGH THAT COUNTY'S VETERANS' COURT. THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES TRAINING TO MEMBERS WHO ACT AS MENTORS FOR VETERANS WHO ARE PROCESSED THROUGH THE VETERANS' COURT. WITH AID FROM THE OHIO ATTORNEY GENERAL'S OFFICE, THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION SEMINARS FOR ATTORNEYS REPRESENTING VETERANS IN THE VETERANS'COURT. THE ORGANIZATION ALSO MENTORS THOSE VETERANS WHO ARE RELEASED FROM INCARCERATION AND ARE TRANSITIONING BACK TO CIVILIAN LIFE.
