COMMUNITY ARTS PROGRAMS:JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENTTHE PROGRAM IS THE WORLD'S LARGEST ORGANIZATION DEDICATED TO EDUCATING STUDENTS ABOUT WORKFORCE READINESS, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND FINANCIAL LITERACY THROUGH EXPERIENCED, HANDS ON PROGRAMS. JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAMS HELP PREPARE YOUNG PEOPLE FOR THE REAL WORLD BY SHOWING THEM HOW TO GENERATE WEALTH AND EFFECTIVELY MANAGE IT, HOW TO CREATE JOBS WHICH MAKE THEIR COMMUNITIES MORE ROBUST, AND HOW TO APPLY ENTREPRENEURIAL THINKING TO THE WORKFORCE. STUDENTS PUT THESE LESSONS INTO ACTION AND LEARN THE VALUE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THEIR COMMUNITIES. ART UNITES COLUMBUS/DELIVER BLACK DREAMSON JUNE 1, 2020, AFTER THE DEATH OF GEORGE FLOYD AT THE HANDS OF THE MINNEAPOLIS POLICE AND THE RESULTING PROTESTS, CAPA AND GCAC PARTNERED TO LAUNCH #ARTUNITESCBUS, AN INITIATIVE TO EMPLOY COLUMBUS-BASED VISUAL ARTISTS TO PAINT MURALS ON THE PLYWOOD INSTALLED OVER THE BROKEN WINDOWS AT THE OHIO THEATRE AND THE GCAC OFFICE. OTHER BUSINESSES THROUGHOUT THE CITY JOINED IN AND BY THE END OF JUNE MORE THAN 200 MURALS HAD BEEN CREATED ON PLYWOOD THROUGHOUT THE CITY. THE MURALS MESSAGES RANGED FROM SUPPORT FOR BLACK LIVES MATTER TO TRIBUTES TO GEORGE FLOYD AND BREONNA TAYLOR, TO MESSAGES OF LOVE AND HOPE. THE PUBLIC QUICKLY ADVOCATED FOR PRESERVING THE MURALS AND GIVING THEM A LIFE AFTER THEY WERE REMOVED FROM STORE FRONT WINDOWS. GCAC COMMITTED TO PRESERVING AND EXHIBITING THE MURALS AND ENCOURAGING DIALOGUE ABOUT THE BLACK LIVES MATTER MOVEMENT AS OUR CITY, AND OUR COUNTRY, WORK TOWARD RACIAL EQUITY.THE PUBLIC REACTION TO THE ARTWORK CREATED FROM #ARTUNITESCBUS SPARKED A DEEPER DISCUSSION ABOUT ART, ACTIVISM AND THE SUPPORT NECESSARY TO CREATE REAL AND LASTING CHANGE AND THESE EXHIBITIONS HAVE BECOME COMPONENTS OF PUBLIC ART AND VISUAL EXPRESSION FOR A NEW ASPIRATIONAL RACIAL EQUITY CAMPAIGN, DELIVER BLACK DREAMS. DELIVER BLACK DREAMS EMERGED INITIALLY AS A GET OUT THE VOTE CAMPAIGN AND HAS EVOLVED INTO A LARGER COMMUNITY-WIDE CAMPAIGN OF, BY AND FOR BLACK PEOPLE. IT IS A CAMPAIGN THAT SEEKS LONG-TERM CHANGE IN THE CULTURE AND ACROSS MULTIPLE SECTORS INCLUDING HEALTH, EDUCATION, CULTURE, SAFETY AND MORE. DELIVER BLACK DREAMS, A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN MAROON ARTS GROUP, THE CITY OF COLUMBUS AND GCAC, USES PUBLIC ART AS A LAUNCH POINT FOR A SUSTAINED AND FUTURE-ORIENTED APPROACH TO ACHIEVING RACIAL EQUITY IN COLUMBUS. THE FIRST OF SIX LARGE PUBLIC MURALS WAS PAINTED IN EARLY NOVEMBER 2020 ON FIFTH AVENUE, JUST WEST OF CLEVELAND AVENUE. IN JULY 2021 THE SECOND DELIVER BLACK DREAMS MURAL TITLED WRITE IT. PAINT IT. DO IT. WAS PAINTED ON WILSON RD. JUST SOUTH OF FISHER. IN SEPTEMBER, THE THIRD MURAL TITLED DARE TO DREAM WAS COMPLETED ON FREBIS JUST EAST OF ALUM CREEK.OTHER PROGRAMS:CAPITAL FUNDINGGCAC USES FUNDS IT RECEIVES FROM THE CITY OF COLUMBUS NATIONWIDE AREA ADMISSIONS TAX TO PROVIDE FUNDING FOR INFRASTRUCTURE INVESTMENT IN CULTURAL ARTS FACILITIES, SPORTS FACILITIES, PUBLIC ART AND PERFORMANCE VENUES, OTHER THAN NATIONWIDE ARENA, WITHIN THE CITY OF COLUMBUS. IN ACCORDANCE WITH ITS CONTRACT, GCAC HAS TO DIRECT A MINIMUM OF 75% OF ALL CITY MONIES IT RECEIVES FOR CAPITAL FUNDING. IF ELIGIBLE EXPENDITURES DO NOT TOTAL 75%, THE FUNDS WILL BE RESERVED AND CARRIED OVER TO THE NEXT CONTRACT YEAR FOR ALLOCATION.FISCAL SPONSORIN 2013, GCAC BEGAN A FISCAL SPONSOR PROGRAM TO SUPPORT ORGANIZATIONS ENGAGED IN ACTIVITIES RELATED TO GCAC'S MISSION THAT ARE APPLYING FOR TAX EXEMPT STATUS. THE ORGANIZATIONS OPERATE AS A PROJECT OF GCAC UNTIL OBTAINING TAX EXEMPT STATUS. GCAC RECEIVES GRANTS, TAX-DEDUCTIBLE CONTRIBUTIONS, AND OTHER REVENUES THAT ARE MADE AVAILABLE TO THE FISCALLY SPONSORED ORGANIZATION FOR THE PURPOSE OF CARRYING OUT THE PROJECT. GCAC RECEIVES AN ADMINISTRATIVE FEE FOR THE SERVICES PROVIDED.SMOOT-CAIN PUBLIC ART PROGRAMDURING 2019, GCAC BEGAN COLLECTING DONATIONS TO BE DIRECTED TO ADD SUPPORT FOR THE CREATION AND INSTALLATION OF NEW PUBLIC ART IN COLUMBUS NEIGHBORHOODS. DUE TO COVID-19, THIS PROGRAM WAS PUT ON HOLD WITH HOPES TO CONTINUE IN 2022.
