SINCE ITS FOUNDING IN 1969, CAPA HAS ACHIEVED INTERNATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR PRESENTING DIVERSE PERFORMING ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT PROGRAMMING, RESTORING HISTORIC THEATRES, EXCELLENCE IN FACILITY MANAGEMENT, AND POSITIVE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN OUR COMMUNITY.CAPA PRESENTATIONS WELCOMED OVER 500,000 PEOPLE TO OUR THEATRES IN FY22. PRESENTATIONS INCLUDED PROGRAMS OF DIVERSE ARTISTS AND ART FORMS, INCLUDING CONCERTS, COMEDY, DANCE, AND FAMILY SHOWS AND THE SUMMER MOVIE SERIES, THE NATION'S LONGEST-RUNNING CLASSIC MOVIE SERIES. CAPA'S OTHER PRESENTATIONS INCLUDED THE FREE COMMON GROUND CONCERTS IN THE COLUMBUS COMMONS, IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COLUMBUS DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION AND FESTIVAL LATINO, OUR LARGEST PRODUCTION AND OHIO'S LARGEST FREE HISPANIC/LATIN/LATINO FESTIVAL. WE ALSO PRESENTED A FULL SEASON OF SHOWS IN PARTNERSHIP WITH BROADWAY IN COLUMBUS, INCLUDING "HADESTOWN", "COME FROM AWAY", AND "WICKED". CAPA IS SERVING AS THE PRESENTER AND FISCAL AGENT FOR CINEMA COLUMBUS, THE NEW ANNUAL FILM FESTIVAL CREATED TO DRAW NATIONAL AND INTERNATIONAL ATTENTION, ARTISTS, AND AUDIENCES TO COLUMBUS.
CAPA OWNS AND/OR MANAGES 10 THEATRE SPACES IN DOWNTOWN COLUMBUS, INCLUDING FOUR HISTORIC THEATRES. OUR THEATRE OPERATIONS INCLUDE FACILITATING RENTAL EVENTS, MAINTAINING THE THEATRES, AND PROVIDING TICKETING AND ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES FOR OTHER NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS. RENTAL EVENTS, MEETINGS, AND REHEARSALS BROUGHT OVER $170,000 PATRONS TO THE THEATRES THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.
OUR EDUCATION AND OUTREACH PROGRAMS INCLUDE THE CAPA MARQUEE AWARDS, AN OFFICIAL REGIONAL AWARDS PROGRAM OF THE NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATRE AWARDS, THE PASSPORT TO LEARNING STUDENT MATINEE SERIES, ARTIST WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES, ARTS-IN-WELLNESS PROGRAMS, AND TOURS OF THE HISTORIC THEATRES. WE REACH OUT TO UNDERSERVED SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES THROUGH FREE PROGRAMS AND EVENTS, REDUCED OR FREE TICKETS, AND SUBSIDIES FOR BUSING STUDENTS TO OUR THEATRES. STUDENTS ALSO RECEIVE STUDY GUIDES AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES. MORE THAN 48,000 CHILDREN BENEFITTED FROM OUR EDUCATION PROGRAMS DURING THE FISCAL YEAR.IN THE FOURTH ANNUAL CAPA MARQUEE AWARDS PRESENTED BY AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER FOUNDATION, 18 SCHOOLS PARTICIPATED, REACHING 1,885 HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. THROUGHOUT THE YEAR, STUDENTS PARTICIPATED IN A SERIES OF FREE MASTER CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS WITH LOCAL AND REGIONAL ARTISTS, INCLUDING THE TOURING BROADWAY CASTS OF "HADESTOWN AND "FIDDLER ON THE ROOF". THE 2022 CAPA MARQUEE AWARDS SHOWCASE PRESENTED BY AMERICAN ELECTRIC POWER FOUNDATION WAS HELD AT THE OHIO THEATRE ON MAY 10. 144 STUDENT PERFORMERS AND STUDENT TECHNICAL CREW MEMBERS WORKED ON THE RED-CARPET EVENT WHICH INCLUDED THE ANNOUNCEMENT OF WINNERS IN EACH CATEGORY AND INCLUDED PERFORMANCES FROM THE NOMINEES FOR BEST MUSICAL PRODUCTION AND BEST PERFORMER IN A LEADING ROLE, AS WELL AS OPENING AND CLOSING NUMBERS THAT INCORPORATED STUDENTS FROM ALL PARTICIPATING HIGH SCHOOLS. IN JUNE, THE TWO WINNERS RECEIVED A CAPA-SPONSORED TRIP TO NEW YORK CITY WHERE THEY JOINED TOP MUSICAL THEATRE STUDENTS FROM ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR PRIVATE COACHING, MASTER CLASSES, AND REHEARSALS IN PREPARATION FOR A SPECIAL SHOWCASE PERFORMANCE AT THE MINSKOFF THEATRE ON BROADWAY ON JUNE 27, 2022. THIS WAS OUR 11TH SEASON PRODUCING MATINEE PERFORMANCES FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES PRE-K-12, AND EVEN THOUGH WE STILL HAD TO MAINTAIN SOCIAL-DISTANCING IN THE THEATRE, WE WERE FINALLY ABLE TO RETURN TO LIVE PERFORMANCES. THIS YEAR WE AWARDED A TOTAL OF $4,435 IN SCHOLARSHIP AND TRANSPORTATION ASSISTANCE FOR OUR FOUR IN-PERSON PRODUCTIONS, "HARRIET TUBMAN AND THE UNDERGROUND RAILROAD", "DOKTOR KABOOM AND THE WHEEL OF SCIENCE", "THE MAYHEM POETS", AND "JACQUELINE AND THE BEANSTALK". AFTER THE PHENOMENAL REACH WE HAD WITH OUR VIRTUAL ARTS ENGAGEMENTS LAST YEAR, WE WERE EXCITED TO OFFER VIRTUAL PROGRAMS AGAIN THIS SEASON. 36,953 STUDENTS WERE REGISTERED TO EXPERIENCE "HIP HOP BODY ROCK WITH PAIGE HERNANDEZ AND "GRIMMZ FAIRY TALES" FREE-OF-CHARGE. ON APRIL 26, 2022, WE HELD A FREE COMMUNITY PERFORMANCE BY NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED SPOKEN WORD VIRTUOSOS, "THE MAYHEM POETS". BEFORE THE PERFORMANCE, YOUTH POETS AGED 13-22 WERE INVITED TO DISPLAY THEIR TALENTS AND SHARE THEIR WORK AS THE OPENING ACT. EACH YOUTH POET SIGNED UP FOR THE OPEN MIC EVENT AND PRESENTED A TWO-MINUTE POEM. "THE MAYHEM POETS" ALSO ATTENDED THE OPEN MIC AND WORKED WITH THE YOUTH POETS TO CREATE A COLLECTIVE POEM ON "IMAGINING A WORLD WITHOUT INJUSTICE" WHICH THE YOUTH POETS WERE INVITED ONSTAGE TO PERFORM LIVE DURING THE SHOW. OVERALL, CAPA EDUCATION PROGRAMS SERVED 43,517 STUDENTS IN 142 SCHOOLS FROM 25 SCHOOL DISTRICTS IN 13 OHIO COUNTIES.
