TO BREAK THE SILENCE THAT ADVERSLY AFFECTS THE AFRICAN AMERICAN COMMUNITY WITH REGARD TO BREAST CANCER WITH THE HOPE AND INTENT TO INCREASE THE NUMBER OF SURVIVORS THROUGH EDUCATION, SUPPORT AND TESTING.

SURVIVOR SUPPORT AND RAPID RESPONSE: THOUGH WE CONTINUED OFFERING VIRTUAL SUPPORT OPTIONS, IN THE FALL OF 2022, WE RESUMED IN PERSON ACTIVITIES BY KICKING OFF BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, WITH OUR TREASURED CELEBRATION OF LIFE TOUR. WE CELEBRATED BREAST CANCER SURVIVORS IN ACTIVE TREATMENT WITH IN-PERSON VISITS, SHOWERING THEM WITH MUCH NEEDED, LOVE, GIFTS, AND ENCOURAGEMENT. WE ALSO PROVIDE MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL SUPPORT TO SURVIVORS THROUGH OUR PARTNERSHIP WITH LICENSED THERAPISTS AND CANCER COACHES. RAPID RESPONSE IS OUR "BOOTS ON THE GROUND" PROGRAM THAT ADDRESSES URGENT PATIENT NEEDS. AS HOUSING CONCERN REMAIN A NATION PROBLEM, THIS PROGRAM PROVIDES SUPPORT FOR HOUSING AND OTHER BASIC NEEDS THAT ENCOURAGE WOMEN TO NOT DEFAULT TREATMENT. WE PROVIDED FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE REQUESTS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. IN ADDITION, WE PROVIDED $12K FOR 25 FAMILIES DURING THE WINTER.
RESEARCH - PROJECT SOAR: OUR RESEARCH EFFORTS CONTINUE TO PAVE THE WAY FOR INNOVATIVE IDEAS IN BREAST CANCER RESEARCH. OUR FIRST OFFERING, THE UBUNTU APPROACH IN PROJECT SOAR (SPEAKING OUR AFRICAN AMERICAN REALITIES) WAS PUBLISHED IN THE DECEMBER 2022 ISSUE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE AND MEDICINE, AN INTERNATIONAL AND INTERDISCIPLINARY FORUM FOR THE DISSEMINATION OF SOCIAL SCIENCE RESEARCH ON HEALTH. THE ARTICLE SPEAKS TO THE ROBUST COMMUNITY-ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CARRIE'S TOUCH AND UCLA, AND THE CO-CREATION OF A MODEL FOR CULTURALLY CURATED FOCUS GROUPS. OUR RESEARCH THROUGH PROJECT SOAR IS BEING PRESENTED AT MAJOR BREAST CANCER CONFERENCES AND SYMPOSIUMS THROUGHOUT THE NATION.
AWARENESS, EDUCATION AND OUTREACH: AWARENESS AND EDUCATION REMAIN THE CORNERSTONE OF OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS. IT IS CRUCIAL TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ABOUT CANCER, TREATMENT OPTIONS, SIDE EFFECTS, AND COMORBIDITIES, TO HELP PATIENTS MAKE INFORMED DECISIONS ABOUT THEIR CANCER CARE. IT IS ALSO CRUCIAL TO EDUCATE THE COMMUNITY ON THE IMPORTANCE OF EARLY DETECTION. MONTHLY SOCIAL AND DIGITAL PROGRAMMING, ALONG WITH LIVESTREAM EVENTS, FOSTER HONEST, INSIGHTFUL, AND INFORMATIVE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT BLACK WOMEN, ADVOCACY, BREAST HEALTH, CO-MORBIDITIES AND SURVIVORSHIP. ANNUAL AFRICAN AMERICAN BREAST CANCER CONFERENCE, WHERE ONE OF OUR LADIES WAS A FEATURED SPEAKER.
