THE PURPOSE OF THE NEWPORT NEWS POLICE DEPARTMENT FOUNDATION IS TO IMPROVE AND SECURE THE QUALITY OF LIFE, PUBLIC SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE CITIZENS OF THE CITY, ITS BUSINESSES AND INSTITUTIONS, AND ITS VISITORS RECOGNIZING THAT THE NEWPORT NEWS POLICE DEPARTMENT IS A KEY AND CRITICAL FORCE IN SUCCESSFULLY ACCOMPLISHING THOSE OBJECTIVES. IN FURTHERANCE OF SUCH PURPOSE, THE FOUNDATION WILL RAISE, MANAGE, INVEST AND DISTRIBUTE FINANCIAL RESOURCES BY FUNDING, ASSISTING OR UNDERTAKING PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES DESIGNED TO SUPPORT, ENHANCE AND STRENGTHEN THE SERVCIES, ORGANIZATION, PERFORMANCE, COMPETENCE, AND PROFESSIONALISM OF THE NNPD, ITS OFFICERS AND MEMBERS.

YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMPS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENTTHE NEWPORT NEWS POLICE DEPARTMENT HELD TWO YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMPS IN 2021. YOUTH LEADERSHIP CAMPS ARE TWICE-A-SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES FOR A CROSS-SECTION OF 13 TO 17-YEAR-OLDS TO LEARN ABOUT TEAMWORK AND TRUST, AND DEVELOP LEADERSHIP AND OTHER LIFELONG SKILLS. STAFFED BY NEWPORT NEWS POLICE OFFICERS, STUDENTS EXPERIENCE AN INTENSE, PARAMILITARY-STYLE PROGRAM. NNPF ALSO PROVIDES CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE NEWPORT NEWS PIPES AND DRUMS CORP AND HAMPTON ROADS BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS. OTHER ACTIVITIES INCLUDE THE POLICE AND PALS PROGRAM TO PROVIDE MOBILE PLAYGROUNDS FOR OFFICERS TO VISIT CHILDREN AT EVENTS, CHURCHES, BUSINESSES AND NEIGHBORHOODS; IN-TOUCH COMMUNITY BASKETBALL FOR FRIENDLY COMPETITION BETWEEN YOUTH AND FIRST RESPONDERS.
AWARDS/GRADUATION/MORALE/EQUIPMENT:THE FOUNDATION PROVIDES FUNDS FOR GRADUATIONS, PROMOTIONS, RETIREMENTS AND MEMORIALS. THE FOUNDATION ALSO PROVIDES FUNDS TO ENHANCE POLICE OFFICER MORALE AND AN ANNUAL POLICE BALL. VARIOUS EQUIPMENT IS PROVIDED FOR SUCH AS TRAUMA KITS FOR OFFICERS TO USE IN SAVING LIVES WHILE FIRST ON THE SCENE PRIOR TO EMS ARRIVING AND NNPF ALSO MADE IT POSSIBLE TO BE ONE OF THE FIRST MUNICIPALITIES ON THE EAST COAST TO FULLY DEPLOY BODY CAMERAS
IN PREVIOUS YEARS, THE FOUNDATION INCURRED EXPENSES RELATED TO IMPROVEMENTS TO A K9 FACILITY FOR THE DEPARTMENT'S K9S. DURING FY21, THIS EFFORT WAS ABANDONED AND ANY CAPITALIZED COSTS WERE EXPENSED.
