DEPAVE EMPOWERS DISENFRANCHISED COMMUNITIES TO OVERCOME SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES AND ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH URBAN RE- GREENING. DEPAVE TRANSFORMS OVER-PAVED PLACES, CREATES RESILIENT COMMUNITY GREENSPACES, PROMOTES WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATION, AND ADVOCATES FOR POLICY CHANGE TO UNDO MANIFESTATIONS OF SYSTEMIC RACISM.

Part 3 - Line 4a

IN 2021, DEPAVE ENGAGED MORE THAN 300 VOLUNTEERS FOR A TOTAL OF 1,225 VOLUNTEER HOURS IN REMOVING ASPHALT, INSTALLING NATIVE PLANTS, AND SUPPLEMENTAL CONSTRUCTION. WE REMOVED 16,865 SQUARE FEET OF ASPHALT AND REDUCED ANNUAL STORMWATER RUNOFF BY ABOUT 168,650 GALLONS. THIS YEAR WE PLANTED 2,056 TREES, SHRUBS, AND OTHER NATIVE PLANTS. PROJECTS THIS YEAR INCLUDED: -DEPAVING AT WHITMAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IN SE PORTLAND TO MAKE WAY FOR TREES AND A NATIVE PLANTING AREA; -DREATING A 3900 SQUARE FEET NATURESCAPED AREA AT OLIVER SCHOOL IN THE CENTENNIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT, WHERE 5TH GRADERS PLANTED TREES AND LEARNED ABOUT TREE BIOLOGY; -COMPLETED CONSTRUCTION AND PLANTING AT POWELL BUTTE ELEMENTARY, WORKING WITH A LOCAL BIPOC-OWNED BUSINESS. OUR GREEN THUMBS PROGRAM PROVIDES MAINTENANCE ASSISTANCE AT PAST DEPAVE PROJECTS. THIS YEAR WE WEEDED AND REPLACED PLANTS AT POWELL BUTTE ELEMENTARY, HOLY REDEEMER CHURCH, AND ST. JOHN'S FOOD SHARE. OUR VIRTUAL BOARD RETREAT FOCUSED ON DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION, AND RESULTED IN UPDATING OUR MISSION STATEMENT: DEPAVE EMPOWERS DISENFRANCHISED COMMUNITIES TO OVERCOME SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL INJUSTICES AND ADAPT TO CLIMATE CHANGE THROUGH URBAN RE- GREENING.
