Describe the Organization's Program Activity:
Part 3 - Line 4a
BLUE STAR SERVICE DOGS INITIATED TRAINING WITH 36 VETERAN AND DOG TEAMS, WITH 6 TEAMS CARRIED OVER FROM 2020. 9 TEAMS EARNED ENDORSEMENTS AND GRADUATED FROM THEIR RESPECTIVE PROGRAMS. OF THE 36, 20 VETERANS ENROLLED IN THE STAR PROGRAM.BSSD'S STAR TRAINING PROGRAMS HOUSED SELECTED SHELTER AND RESCUE DOGS AT PRISONS LOCATED IN LAPEER AND FREELAND MICHIGAN TO COMPLETE BASIC OBEDIENCE AND PRE-TASK TRAINING BY VETTED INMATE HANDLERS. BSSD TRAINERS CONDUCT REGULAR TRAINING SESSIONS AND EVALUATIONS UNTIL DOG CADETS ARE PAIRED WITH THEIR VETERAN. THIS PROGRAM INVOLVES 30 HANDLERS/INMATES, 12 HANDLERS BEING INCARCERATED VETERANS, GIVING THEM MOTIVATION TO STRIVE TOWARD COOPERATIVE BEHAVIOR DURING THEIR INCARCERATION. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES PURPOSE FOR INMATES INTERESTED IN HELPING THE COMMUNITY, DISABLED VETERANS, AND DOGS. IN 2021 WE RESCUED 32 DOGS FROM SHELTERS, RETURNED 5 DOGS TO SHELTERS, AND ADOPTED OUT 9 DOGS AS COMPANION DOGS AFTER THEY FAILED SERVICE DOG CERTIFICATION..
BSSD OFFERS A POPULAR BRING YOUR OWN DOG PROGRAM WHERE OUR QUALIFIED TRAINERS EVALUATE CURRENT BONDED COMPANION DOGS OF VETERAN APPLICANTS WHO WOULD LIKE TO USE THAT DOG TO ACHIEVE MORE INDEPENDENCE AS A SERVICE DOG. AFTER THE VETERAN IS ADMITTED TO THE PROGRAM, UPON A SUCCESSFUL EVALUATION THE DOG WILL COMPLETE OUR FORMAL TRAINING PROCESS. THIS YEAR WE SERVED 16 VETERANS IN THE BYOD PROGRAM.
WE EDUCATE THE PUBLIC. INFORMATION ON ASSISTANCE DOGS AND OTHER WORKING DOGS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO NAVIGATE. OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM PROVIDES PRESENTATIONS ON THE PURPOSE AND HISTORY OF SERVICE DOGS, SERVICE DOG LAWS, COMPANIES DEALING WITH EMPLOYEES AND CUSTOMERS WITH SERVICE DOGS, AND SERVICE DOG ETIQUETTE. EDUCATING THE PUBLIC ON THIS INFORMATION CREATES BETTER COMMUNITIES FOR OUR VETERANS TO TRANSITION INSIDE AND RESTORE THEIR INDEPENDENCE. WE COMPLETED 27 PRESENTATIONS AT CORPORATIONS, VETERAN SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS, YOUTH PROGRAMS AND CLUBS OR COMMUNITY GROUPS IN 2021.
