AFTER-SCHOOL WRITING LAB- OPEN MONDAY-THURSDAY IN-PERSON OR VIRTUALLY FOR TWIN CITIES STUDENTS IN GRADES K-12 TO RECEIVE HELP ON HOME HELP ON HOMEWORK AND CREATIVE WRITING WHICH LEADS TO PUBLICATION. THIS PROGRAM CONNECTS VOLUNTEER TUTORS ONE-TO-ONE OR ONE-TO-SOME FOR INDIVIDUALIZED TUTORING AND SUPPORT. TWO CHAPBOOKS OF CREATIVE WRITING FROM ASWL'S YOUNG AUTHORS ARE PUBLISHED ANNUALLY. THIS PROGRAM SERVES ABOUT 75 STUDENTS.
"WRITERS' ROOM AT SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL IN MINNEAPOLIS -STUDENTS AND FACULTY RECEIVE DEDICATED WRITING SUPPORT FROM 826 MSP STAFF AND VOLUNTEERS THROUGH IN-CLASS TUTORING, DROP-IN WRITING CONSULTATIONS, AND THE HOSTING OF WORKSHOPS, EVENTS, AND AUTHOR VISITS.THE WRITERS' ROOM ADVISORY COUNCIL ENLISTS TEN YOUTH IN WITH PAID LEADERSHIP ROLES TO DEVELOP PROGRAMMING, FACILITATE EVENTS, AND ADVERTISE SERVICES SCHOOL-WIDE. THIS PROGRAM SERVES ABOUT 1,000 STUDENTS. "
YOUNG AUTHORS' BOOK PROJECT- 826 MSP PARTNERS WITH A DIFFERENT SCHOOL ANNUALLY TO PROFESSIONALLY PUBLISH A STUDENT ANTHOLOGY. IN THE 2020-2021 SCHOOL YEAR, WE DEVELOPED AN EDITORIAL BOARD OF BLACK HIGH SCHOOL YOUTH TO EDIT AND CURATE AN ANTHOLOGY TITLED "REHUMANIZE ME" FOCUSING ON THEMES OF BLACK JOY, HEALING, LIBERATION, AND SELF-DETERMINATION.
"YOUNG AUTHORS' COUNCIL- THIS IS A PAID PUBLISHING, LEADERSHIP, AND ADVISORY OPPORTUNITY FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 6 - 12. YOUNG AUTHORS' COUNCIL. SELECTED STUDENTS WRITE CREATIVELY, SERVE AS AN EDITORIAL BOARD FOR AN ANNUAL PUBLICATION, AND CONNECT WITH LITERARY TALENT, CIVIC LEADERS, AND 826 MSP BOARD MEMBERS. THIS PROGRAM SERVES 10 STUDENTS. FIELD TRIPS AND DISTANCE LEARNING SUPPORTS- WE OFFER IN-PERSON AND VIRTUAL STORYTELLING AND BOOKMAKING FIELD TRIPS FOR STUDENTS IN GRADES 2-5.
