KNOW THYSELF PROVIDES URBAN STUDENTS WITH CRITICAL LIFE SKILLS SKILLS SUCH AS SELF-AWARENESS, CONFLICT RESOLUTION, EMPATHY, GOAL SETTING AND DECISION MAKING THEREBY ENABLING THEM TO BE POSITIVE CONTRIBUTORS IN THEIR COMMUNITY. KNOW THYSELF USES A BACK TO BASICS APPROACH TO HELP STUDENTS IDENTIFY THEIR STRENGTHS, MANAGE THEIR BEHAVIORS, AND MAKE DECISIONS THAT LEAD TO POSITIVE OUTCOMES. PARTICIPATING STUDENTS RECEIVE APPROXIMATELY 30 HOURS OF TRAINING AND ACTIVITIES ARE TAILORED SO THAT THEY ARE AGE APPROPRIATE. OUR CURRICULUM SUPPORTS SEVERAL WISCONSIN AND NATIONAL SCHOOL COMMON CORE STANDARDS ALIGNING OUR WORK WITH DISTRICT AND STATE LEARNING EXPECTATIONS. ROLE-PLAYING, GROUP DISCUSSIONS, REFLECTION, AND JOURNALING ARE THE TOOLS WE USE TO GUIDE OUR STUDENTS. LAST ACADEMIC YEAR, KNOW THYSELF PARTNERED WITH 9 SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS IMPACTING 250 STUDENTS IN GRADES 5TH-8TH. ALL OF THESE PARTNERS WORK IN/WITH COMMUNITIES WHERE THE MAJORITY OF RESIDENTS QUALIFY FOR FREE AND REDUCED LUNCH, ARE MEMBERS OF ETHNIC MINORITY GROUPS AND PERFORM BELOW ACADEMIC EXPECTATIONS IN CORE SUBJECTS.A CRITICAL PART OF OUR WORK INVOLVES PROVIDING EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR OUR STUDENTS. THIS NOT ONLY BROADENS THEIR WORLD VIEW, IT PROVIDES REAL LIFE SITUATIONS TO PRACTICE THE SKILLS THEY ARE LEARNING IN CLASS.
