SHELLFISH RESTORATION - SARASOTA BAY WATCH'S SHELLFISH RESTORATION IS A MULTIFACETED COLLABORATIVE EFFORT WHICH IS FINANCIALLY INDEPENDENT OF FEDERAL, STATE AND LOCAL FUNDING. OVER 250,000 CLAMS WERE PLACED IN SARASOTA BAY DURING THIS FILING'S TIMEFRAME WITH OVER 1,000,000 FORTHCOMING. THESE NATURAL FILTER FEEDERS ARE UTILIZED TO CLEAN SARASOTA BAY'S WATERS.MONOFILAMENT CLEANUPS - EACH YEAR DERELICT FISHING GEAR ENTANGLES AND KILLS SARASOTA BAY'S ICONIC SEABIRDS, ESPECIALLY IMPACTING BROWN PELICANS, SNOWY EGRETS, CORMORANT, AND GREAT BLUE HERONS.

OVER 250,000 NATIVE CLAMS WERE PLACED IN THE WATERS OF MANATEE AND SARASOTA COUNTY DURING THIS FILING'S TIMEFRAME WITH OVER 1,000,000 FORTHCOMING. THESE NATURAL FILTER FEEDERS ARE UTILIZED TO CLEAN WATER OF HARMFUL ALGAE AND EXCESS NUTRIENTS, IMPROVE WATER CLARITY TO IMPROVE SEAGRASS GROWTH AND PROMOTE ABUNDANT DIVERSE FISHERIES.


SARASOTA BAY WATCH YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM. HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS FROM A VARIETY OF LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS WERE INTERVIEWED AND JOINED THE PROGRAM TO LEARN LEADERSHIP SKILLS, DISCOVER THE WORKINGS OF A NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION, LEARN ABOUT THE LOCAL MUNICIPALITIES AND ORGANIZATIONS THAT WORK ON AND FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, LEARN ABOUT CAREER OPTIONS WITHIN THE ENVIRONMENTAL FIELDS, AND TEACH MARINE SCIENCE CAMP TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS.


MARINE DEBRIS CLEANUPS- EACH YEAR TRASH AND DERELICT FISHING GEAR IS RETIREIVED FROM LOCAL WATERS THAT PROMOTE A HEALTH RISK TO HUMANS, MARINE ANIMALS, AND COASTAL BIRDS. BY REMOVING GEAR ABOVE AND BELOW THE WATER FISHING GEAR THAT 'GHOST FISHES AND DETROYS MARINE HABITAT IS REMOVED.


ISLAND CLEANUPS- TRASH REMOVAL AND VEGETATIVE RESTORATION. COASTAL AND SHOAL ISLANDS ARE CLEANED UTILIZING VOLUNTEERS WITHIN THE COCMMUNITY AND SCHOOL AGED CHILDREN. STUDENTS ARE PROVIDED WITH UNIQUE EXPERIENCES ON THE WATER, MANY FOR THE FIRST TIME. ISLANDS ARE CLEANED OF TRASH, INVASIVE PLANTS ARE IDENTIFIED AND SMALL PLANTS ARE REMOVED WHILE THE PLANTING OF NATIVE SPECIES THAT WILL ATTRACT POLLINATORS AND INCREASE THE HABITAT VALUE ARE PLANTED.
