MELANOMA KNOW MORE RESEARCH: MELANOMA KNOW MORE MADE A FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION TO SUPPORT THE CONTINUED RESEARCH BEING CONDUCTED AT THE DR. ZALFA ABDEL-MALEK LABORATORY AT THE UNIVERSITY OF CINCINNATI. DR. ABDEL-MALEK'S RESEARCH IS FOCUSED ON INVESTIGATING THE FUNCTION OF THE MELANOCORTIN 1 RECEPTOR (MC1R), ITS AGONISTS A-MELANOCYTE STIMULATING HORMONE (A-MSH) AND ACTH, AND ANTAGONISTS AGOUTI SIGNALING PROTEIN AND HUMAN -DEFENSIN 3 IN REGULATING CUTANEOUS PIGMENTATION AND THE RESPONSE TO UV RADIATION. SHE WAS AMONG THE FIRST TO DEMONSTRATE THAT HUMAN MELANOCYTES EXPRESS FUNCTIONAL MC1R AND THAT ACTIVATION OF THIS RECEPTOR IS CRITICAL FOR THE MELANOGENIC (I.E. TANNING RESPONSE) TO UV.
FREE MONTHLY SKIN CANCER SCREENING CLINICS: ON THE SECOND SATURDAY OF EVERY MONTH FROM 10AM - NOON, A CANCER SCREENING CLINIC IS SCHEDULED AND SUPPORTED BY DERMATOLOGISTS, NURSES, AND ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF, WHO VOLUNTEER THEIR TIME TO DETECT SKIN CANCER, SPECIFICALLY MELANOMA. IF ONE OF THE VOLUNTEER DERMATOLOGISTS NOTES A SUSPICIOUS FINDING THAT COULD POTENTIALLY BE A MELANOMA, THE PATIENT IS EXPEDITED WITHIN FOUR WEEKS FROM THE CLINIC DATE TO A DERMATOLOGIST FOR FURTHER EVALUATION AND A POSSIBLE BIOPSY. MELANOMA KNOW MORE IS THE ONLY ORGANIZATION IN THE US TO PROVIDE SUCH CONSISTENT SCREENINGS.IN 2021, MELANOMA KNOW MORE PROVIDED 2 FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENING CLINICS. 91 PATIENTS WERE SCREENING DURING THE YEAR. DUE TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC AND STATE AND LOCAL RESTRICTIONS ON GATHERINGS, THE NUMBER OF FREE SKIN CANCER SCREENING CLINICS WAS REDUCED FROM 12 TO 3.
MELANOMA KNOW MORE EDUCATION & PREVENTION: MELANOMA KNOW MORE HOSTED A BOOTH AT THE WESTERN & SOUTHERN TENNIS OPEN TO PROVIDE FREE SUNSCREEN AND EDUCATION ON SKIN CANCER PREVENTION. VOLUNTEERS ALSO PROVIDED SUPPORT AND A FORUM FOR DISCUSSION WITH PATIENT AND FAMILY MEMBERS AFFECTED BY THE DISEASE.
MELANOMA KNOW MORE COMMUNITY OUTREACH: MELANONAM KNOW MORE PARTNERED WITH 3CDC TO SUPPORT SKIN CANCER PREVENTION EDUCATION FOR WORKOUT ON THE GREEN AT WASHINGTON PARK AND FOR ZIEGLER PARK. FREE SUNSCREEN WAS PROVIDED VIA DISPENSER STATIONS LOCATED BY THE SPLASH PARK AND AT ZIEGLER PARK POOL. IMPACT WAS ESTIMATED AT 10,000 INDIVIDUALS SUPPORTED.
