LOCATED IN OAKLAND, THE HEART OF PITTSBURGH'S "EDS, MEDS, AND TECH" DISTRICT, CARLOW UNIVERSITY IS A PRIVATE, CO-EDUCATIONAL, CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY FOUNDED IN 1929 BY THE SISTERS OF MERCY. OFFERING AN INTIMATE, PERSONALIZED ENVIRONMENT AND FACULTY FOCUSED ON TEACHING EXCELLENCE AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING, CARLOW IS KNOWN FOR ITS STRONG COMMITMENT TO SOCIAL JUSTICE, ETHICAL FORWARD-THINKING LEADERSHIP AND MEANINGFUL SERVICES THAT MAKE A POSITIVE IMPACT IN THE COMMUNITY AND BEYOND. APPROXIMATELY 44% OF CARLOW'S STUDENT POPULATION IS PELL-ELIGIBLE, 26.6% ARE STUDENTS OF COLOR, AND CARLOW RANKS 15TH OUT OF 41 COLLEGES IN PENNSYLVANIA ON SOCIAL MOBILITY. UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS ALONG WITH THEIR FACULTY ARE DEVELOPING AND IMPLEMENTING COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIRS PROVIDING HEALTH EDUCATION AND HEALTH SCREENINGS TO LOCAL COMMUNITIES.THE CARLOW UNIVERSITY SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY CLINIC PROVIDES NO COST DIAGNOSTIC AND TREATMENT SERVICES FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS WITH COMMUNICATION NEEDS. TYPICAL SPEECH-LANGUAGE REFERRALS INCLUDE CHILDREN WITH SPEECH AND LANGUAGE DELAYS AND ADULTS WITH COGNITIVE-LINGUISTIC, MOTOR SPEECH, AND LANGUAGE NEEDS. ALL SESSIONS ARE LED BY A CARLOW UNIVERSITY SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENT CLINICIAN UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN ASHA-CERTIFIED AND PENNSYLVANIA LICENSED SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY FACULTY MEMBER. THE CARLOW SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY CLINIC IS LOCATED ON THE FOURTH FLOOR OF CARLOW'S UNIVERSITY COMMONS BUILDING. APPOINTMENTS ARE AVAILABLE FALL, SPRING, AND SUMMER SEMESTERS. HOURS OF OPERATION VARY BY SEMESTER AND INCLUDE MORNING AND AFTERNOON APPOINTMENTS. THE CLINIC WELCOMED ITS FIRST PATIENTS IN THE FALL 2021 SEMESTER AND QUICKLY FILLED IN THE AVAILABLE APPOINTMENTS. CURRENTLY, THE CLINIC SERVES APPROXIMATELY 25 PATIENTS PER SEMESTER. INDIVIDUAL, GROUP, FACE-TO-FACE, AND TELETHERAPY SESSIONS ARE PROVIDED. THESE COLLECTIVE ENDEAVORS ARE PROVIDING OUR STUDENTS WITH VALUABLE EDUCATIONAL PREPARATION UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF THEIR FACULTY MEMBERS AND SERVE OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY OF OAKLAND AND THE SURROUNDING PITTSBURGH AREA. IN ADDITION, THE SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY DEPARTMENT HAS PROVIDED SEVERAL COMMUNITY AND UNIVERSITY-BASED HEALTH FAIRS WITH EMPHASIS ON PROVIDING HEARING SCREENINGS AT NO COST. SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY GRADUATE STUDENTS, UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF A LICENSED AND ASHA-CERTIFIED AUDIOLOGIST, LEAD THE COMMUNITY-BASED HEARING SCREENINGS. THEY ALSO SERVED THE CARLOW COMMUNITY BY OFFERING A FREE HEARING CLINIC TO EMPLOYEES AND STUDENTS THIS FALL.THESE EVENTS PROVIDE A VALUABLE OPPORTUNITY FOR CARLOW STUDENTS TO DEVELOP THEIR CLINICAL SKILLS AND SUPPORT THE UNIVERSITY'S MISSION TO SERVE THE COMMUNITY WITH THE HIGHEST LEVEL OF COMPASSION AND PROFESSIONALISM.
