THE CHUCK TANNER AWARDS ARE AWARDED TO HONOREES WHOSE WORKEXEMPLIFIES THE VALUES THAT MADE CHUCK TANNER A BELOVED MANAGER. A NATIVE OF NEW CASTLE, PENNSYLVANIA, CHUCK TANNER'S BASEBALL CAREER SPANNED 60 YEARS WITH EIGHT YEARS AS A PLAYER AND 19 YEARS AS A MAJOR LEAGUE MANAGER. MANAGING THE PITTSBURGH PIRATES FROM 1977 THROUGH 1985, TANNER IS REVERED AS AN OPTIMISTIC LEADER WHO INSTILLED CONFIDENCE AND INSPIRED HIS PLAYERS.
