LYON ARBORETUMS RESEARCH EMPHASIS ON CONSERVATION BIOLOGY AND HORTICULTURAL SPECIALIZATION HAS LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF ITS HAWAIIAN RARE PLANT PROGRAM (HRPP), WHICH FOR 18 YEARS HAS FOCUSED ON THE RESCUE AND RECOVERY OF HAWAIIS MOST CRITICALLY ENDANGERED NATIVE PLANTS THROUGH THE USE OF MICROPROPAGATION. DUE TO ITS LOCATION, UNIQUE PROPAGATIVE METHODOLOGY AND AFFILIATIONS, HRPP HOUSES HAWAIIS LARGEST AND MOST DIVERSE COLLECTION OF HAWAIIAN PLANT TAXA, AND HAS EMERGED AS A MAJOR CONSERVATION CENTER AND LEADER IN EX SITU PLANT CONSERVATION METHODOLOGIES. TO DATE, THE HRPP MICROPROPAGATION LAB HAS SUCCESSFULLY GROWN OVER 300 HAWAIIAN PLANT TAXA USING MICROPROPAGATION TECHNIQUES. CURRENTLY, IT HOUSES MORE THAN 25,000 PLANTS, REPRESENTING APPROXIMATELY 200 NATIVE PLANT TAXA (OF WHICH, MORE THAN HALF ARE FEDERALLY LISTED AS ENDANGERED OR THREATENED), AND OVER 50 VARIETIES OF HAWAIIAN KALO. LAST YEAR ALONE, OVER 1,000 PLANTS WERE PRODUCED VIA MICROPROPAGATION FOR VARIOUS CONSERVATION PROJEC
